Chuck Schumer blames Trump's government cost-cutting for Texas flood deaths

The recent catastrophic, generational floods that impacted parts of Texas over the past few weeks, which have killed over 100 people, including children, have already turned political, thanks to high-ranking Democrats.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), according to The Hill, has already blamed the floods on President Donald Trump, insisting that vacancies at the National Weather Service (NWS) led to the high death toll of the Texas flooding situation.

Schumer has gone as far as demanding an investigation by the Commerce Department’s inspector general to investigate the alleged vacancies at the NWS.

The accusations of vacancies have already been widely rebuked by several top NWS officials, but that hasn't stopped Democrats from running with the false story.

What's going on?

In a letter written Monday by Schumer to Roderick Anderson, the Commerce Department’s acting inspector general, the New York Democrat urged him to "open an investigation into the scope, breadth, and ramifications of whether staffing shortages at key local National Weather Service (NWS) stations contributed to the catastrophic loss of life and property during the deadly flooding."

The Hill noted:

He noted that The New York Times reported that key forecasting and coordination positions at the San Antonio and San Angelo offices of the NWS were vacant at the time of the Friday storm.

The claims were that the NWS offices in charge of the event were missing key experts that could have better coordinated the efforts to prevent deaths and injury from the flooding.

Schumer wrote, "These are the experts responsible for modeling storm impacts, monitoring rising water levels, issuing flood warnings, and coordinating directly with local emergency managers about when to warn the public and issue evacuation orders."

He added, "To put it plainly: they help save lives."

Social media reacts

Schumer's wild accusations have already been rebuked by NWS officials and others, and social media users weighed in on the situation.

"Chuck could trip over a fully staffed weather center issuing warnings in real-time and still blame Trump. Grief isn’t a prop, but he is," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "Leave it to the Democrats to use a tradegy for political gain."

They always do.
