Co-defendants in high-profile Fani Willis case acquitted on most serious charges

In the wake of her case against President-elect Donald Trump being quashed completely, Willis was dealt another blow in a high-profile case involving rapper "Young Thug."

According to the Daily Mail, a co-defendant in the case involving the Atlanta rapper was acquitted on several charges pursued by Willis and her prosecutors, making for an embarrassing showing in the courtroom.

Fulton County DA Fani Willis hasn't had her best year, to say the very least.

In a trial that saw Young Thug escape a conviction in October, Deamonte Kendrick, also known as Yak Gotti, was acquitted on several charges that included murder and gang-related charges.

What's going on?

The co-defendant was one of a dozen accused of being part of the Young Slime Life (YSL) gang in the Atlanta area.

As Willis seems to be quite fond of doing, she pursued charges against the rapper-affiliated co-defendants using Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO) Act, which definitely didn't turn out the way she presumably expected.

The Daily Mail noted:

Kendrick, who wore a Prada tie to court, looked relieved as Judge Paige Reese Whitaker read out: 'Mr. Kendrick, you have been found not guilty on all charges.'

He did the sign of the cross before kissing his fingers as his lawyer wrapped a comforting arm around him, video taken by Fox 5 DC showed.

Notably, the trial was reported as one of the longest in the state's history, having started from an indictment issued by Willis in May 2022.

The indictment alleged that the people reportedly associated with the "gang" were responsible for various offenses, including murder and other violent gang activity in and around Atlanta.

Others acquitted

It wasn't just Kendrick who gained his freedom this week in the courtroom, as another co-defendant, Shannon Stillwell, was acquitted of the most serious charges including murder, racketeering and gang-related charges.

However, Stillwell was found guilty of firearm possession by a convicted felon.

Needless to say, Stillwell reportedly looked happy when the judge announced the news, as the murder charge would have obviously brought the highest prison sentence.

Willis seems to keep striking out in her prosecutorial efforts. Only time will tell if that's ultimately the situation with the Trump case.
