College football star Andre Seldon Jr. drowns in cliff-diving accident

College football fans were shocked this past weekend to learn that star player Andre Seldon Jr. was found dead. 

According to NBC News, the Utah State University cornerback's body was discovered on Saturday after the Cache County Sheriff's Office was alerted to a possible drowning on Saturday.

Seldon died in what appears to have been a cliff-diving accident

Witnesses reported that an individual was observed failing to surface after diving into water from a cliff near the Porcupine Dam.

Divers from the sheriff's office located Seldon's body at around 9 p.m. on Saturday evening and identified him as a Utah State University student.

"Our initial investigation leads us to believe this is a tragic accident as multiple witnesses recount the same information," a statement released by the sheriff's office read. "Our heartfelt condolences go to family and friends of the student athlete."

Utah State University later acknowledged that Seldon had passed away in a statement of its own released on social media.

Coach remembers Seldon as "an incredible person and teammate"

"The Utah State University community is mourning the death of football student-athlete Andre Seldon Jr. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones," it read.

Nate Dreiling serves as Utah State's interim head coach, and he spoke up as well, with NBC News quoting him as saying that Seldon "was an incredible person and teammate."

"Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss," the interim head coach went on to declare.

New Mexico State University "devastated" by Seldon's death

NBC News noted that Seldon had previously played for New Mexico State University after transferring from the University of Michigan, and the school posted an online tribute of its own.

"The Aggie community is devastated to hear the news of the passing of Andre Seldon Jr. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. Rest easy, Andre," it read.

Seldon's New Mexico State University profile states that in 2022 he "played in 13 games for the Aggies, making 12 starts en route to a Quick Lane Bowl victory."

It further stated that was "ranked fifth on the team with 44 tackles, while also being among the five Aggie players to record an interception – and the only one to return it for a touchdown."
