Comey trying to block use of information from previous probe
Lawyers for former FBI Director James Comey argued Wednesday that documents covering previous communications with his lawyers can't be used in the current case, because the previous probe never resulted in charges against him and the communications are privileged.
Comey was indicted in October on two counts of lying to Congress in 2020. Prosecutors said that Comey testified that he didn't authorize an associate to leak confidential information about President Donald Trump in 2016, and that his testimony was a lie.
Comey has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which seem a little vague to me. Undoubtedly, Comey did lie in his testimony, but it doesn't seem like it will be easy to prove it.
Prosecutors don't appear to know who Comey authorized or exactly what they leaked. That's not going to make for a strong case.
Retaliation or deterrence?
But it's clear that Trump wanted to take some action against Comey after it became clear that he tried everything he could to thwart the president's first term and taint it with the perception of wrongdoing that didn't actually exist.
Maybe it's retaliation, or maybe it's just an attempt to teach the left a lesson about using dirty tactics to go after Trump, but in either case, Comey is on the defensive.
A trial is set for January 5, but it wouldn't surprise me if delays push it back months or even years.
There's a lot either side could do to slow down the trial, and the fight over whether this old info can be used is the first volley in what could be a long match.
Biden-appointed judge
The case has been assigned to a Biden-appointed judge, so the indictment could be the most revenge Trump is going to get, if that's what he was going for.
He seems to be taking it as a win either way--if he gets a conviction, it will be justice finally done.
If he doesn't, it just further proves that the justice system is stacked against him, which he already "knew."
It's sad that so many things seem to come down to partisanship these days.
There used to be at least the perception of fairness and objectivity, but that seems to be long gone in today's political environment.
It probably happened when morality became divorced from politics and government, which has not done anything good for us as a country, and will be extremely difficult to get back, if we ever can.
