Conflicting reports have been published about the potential cause of death of a congressional staff member.

This, according to Fox News, concerns the recent passing of Regina Santos-Aviles, who was a staffer for U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX).

She died over the weekend after authorities found her lit on fire.

Background

In case you missed, we will quickly catch you up on the details of the incident.

People magazine reports:

Emergency medical services as well as the police and fire departments were called to a home in Uvalde on Saturday, Sept. 13, shortly after 9:30 p.m. local time, the Uvalde Police Department confirmed to PEOPLE in statements and an incident report. Local authorities told the San Antonio Express-News that Santos-Aviles, 35, was on fire when they were called to her property.

She was subsequently transported to a hospital, but she ended up succumbing to her injuries by the morning.

Santos-Aviles' mother was one of the last to see her alive.

The New York Post reports:

“Her last words were ‘I don’t want to die,’” her heartbroken mother, Nora Ann Gonzales, told the outlet of when she arrived at the home and found her fully conscious daughter ablaze. “And they told her, ‘We will do our best to make sure we get you taken care of.’”

How was she set on fire?

This is the big question that many are currently asking, and, thus far, we do not have a definitive answer from the authorities.

Thus far, Uvalde Police Chief Homer Delgado has publicly stated that there were no signs "of foul play."

This would appear to rule out some possibilities, while also leaving the possibility that Santos-Aviles set herself on fire, either accidentally or on purpose.

Her mother has claimed that "it was an accident," that her daughter did not commit suicide. Others, however, are already reporting the incident as a suicide. We'll have to wait to see what the conclusion authorities come to.

In the meantime, Rep. Gonzalez has paid tribute to Santos-Aviles, writing:

We are all heart-stricken by the recent news. Regina devoted her profession toward making a difference in her community. She will always be remembered for her passion towards Uvalde and helping the community become a better place.
