Congress has been rocked by the shocking murder of Michigan congressman Dan Kildee's (D) younger brother.

The 27-year-old suspect, who has not been charged yet, is the son of victim Timothy Kildee. The 57-year-old was shot dead Tuesday at his home in Vienna Township, north of Flint.

“Our family is grieving and heartbroken,” Dan Kildee said. “There are no words to describe the loss of a beloved brother and family member, especially in such a terrible tragedy.”

“I thank the community for honoring my family’s privacy during this very difficult time," he added.

The shooter is under police watch at the hospital, where he is being treated for "serious injuries" after stealing his father's car and driving it at high speed into a pickup truck. Two people in the pickup truck were not seriously injured.

Investigators are still piecing together what happened, but they believe the suspect was acting violently for several hours before taking his father's life. The shooter was involved in a domestic dispute with another family member around 3 a.m. in nearby Burton, Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said.

A "gun was presented" during the altercation and the suspect fled on foot, before reaching out to his mother, who picked him up in her car to bring him to his father's house.

On the way there, the gunman jumped out of the car, prompting his divorced parents to begin a search for him. Timothy Kildee returned home alone around 5 a.m., and a verbal confrontation ensued between Kildee and his son that was overheard by his other son.

The suspect told his father to surrender his wallet and his keys and then fired a single gunshot. The gunman then stole his father's truck and drove away at high speed.

The wallet was found on the suspect after he crashed the vehicle.

The suspect is facing charges of murder, carjacking, and armed robbery.

“There’s a potential of some substance abuse,” Swanson said.

“The behavior of the suspect lends anyone to believe there was some type of breakdown and/or other entanglements that caused him to be so violent. But the key to this case, from all three scenes, is absolute violent behavior.”

The suspect is expected to be arraigned remotely from the hospital, where he is recovering from surgery. Dan Kildee announced his retirement from Congress last year. He was initially elected in 2012, replacing his uncle, longtime congressman Dale Kildee.
