Congressman ditches wife for one of his colleagues

It appears that a married U.S. congressman has just ditched his wife for a fellow member of Congress.

The congressman, according to the Daily Mail, is U.S. Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA), and the congresswoman for whom McCormick has left his wife is U.S. Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-NY).

It is unclear how long the affair has been going on for.

Some rumors suggest that the two congress members have been seeing each other since January, while others say it has been going on for over a year. Unless and until McCormick or Van Duyne reveal the truth, we are not going to know.

Divorce papers filed

The New York Post reports that the 55-year-old McCormick has filed for divorce from his wife, Debra Miller. The filing was made on May 3, 2024, at the Gwinnett County court.

McCormick and Miller, an oncologist, have been married for over a decade - for 12 years.

A spokesperson for McCormick has said, "Congressman McCormick and Dr. Miller have been separated for quite some time. He has kept that private and will continue to keep his personal life out of the media spotlight."

Specific details, however, have not been confirmed. Miller, herself, has released a public statement, and, in it, she seemed to suggest that McCormick is to blame for their marital problems.

She said that she does not expect McCormick to "be forthcoming" about the reason for their divorce. And, when asked about alleged infidelity, she said that reporters ought to "ask Rich and his colleague," presumably Van Duyne.

Here's what we know so far:

One of the reasons why there have been rumors in Congress about McCormick and Van Duyne is because the two have been a bit touchy-feely.

The Daily Mail reports, "Footage from the March 7 State of the Union address shows McCormick stroking Van Duyne's arm, and sources say this is commonplace for the seemingly smitten pair."

The outlet adds, "They've been caught arriving at and leaving late-night events together, and multiple eyewitnesses have seen the pair holding hands just off the House floor."

Van Duyne, for her part, has released a statement, saying:

His marriage has been over for quite some time as I understand it, he's filed for divorce. I'm single. We're both parents of adult children and empty nesters. We are happily engaged in a relationship and beyond that it's a personal issue.

It would appear as though that ship has sailed.
