Representative Hakeem Jeffries, the House Minority Leader, has confirmed the death of his father, Marland Jeffries.

Rest in peace.

Jeffries’s office shared the news on January 1st, 2023 that Jeffries’ father, Marland Jeffries, had passed away at the age of 85 the day before.

"Mr. Jeffries died peacefully in his sleep during the early morning hours of Sunday, December 31, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Laneda, two sons, five grandchildren, brother and a host of family and friends throughout the country," the recent statement from the House Minority Leader read.

Jeffries has requested respect for his family during this period of grief.

They mourn together.

"The Jeffries family asks for privacy at this time. May God bless and watch over your family and loved ones in 2024," the statement continued.

Jeffries also went on to discuss some of his father’s accomplishments.

"Marland Jeffries, a graduate of Central State University in Ohio and Columbia University in New York, and proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., will be dearly missed. Those who love him are thankful for the full life that he lived," the statement from Jeffries’ office noted.

While we may not know much about Marland Jeffries outside of what Hakeem Jeffries has shared of his father, we do know he has had a huge influential presence on his son.

During an interview with Farah Halime, Hakeem Jeffries has previously credited his “public service spirit” to the way he was raised by his parents.

Because of that “public service spirit,” Hakeem Jeffries is now committed to a life of making a difference in the political world and doing something he believes matters.

No matter how you feel about Hakeem Jeffries’ political opinions, you have to admit that it is nice to know he experienced such a positive, impactful relationship with his father.

It is safe to assume that losing Marland Jeffries is extremely difficult for Hakeem Jeffries.

You don't have to like Hakeem's politics to know that.

We hope Hakeem Jeffries and the rest of Marland Jeffries’ loved ones can take comfort knowing what a fulfilled life he led during his time on earth.
