Conservative leaders favor 'clean continuing resolution' to avoid shutdown: report

Conservative leaders are calling for Congress to pass what is being referred to as "a clean continuing resolution" to avoid a government shutdown.

This is according to a new report from The Hill.

Per the outlet:

Dozens of major conservative activist leaders and organizers are urging conservatives in Congress to support a clean continuing resolution (CR) to avert a government shutdown in a memo organized by the Conservative Action Project.

The memo is reported to have been signed by the likes of ". Kenneth Blackwell, chair of the Conservative Action Project; former Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), chair of Conservative Partnership Institute; David McIntosh, president of the Club for Growth," and others.

Background

Once again, there is another looming government shutdown.

The New York Post explains:

Congress has until 11:59 p.m. on March 14 to pass a measure to keep the government open. Any bill to keep the government funded passed by the GOP-led House would need to clear a 60-vote threshold in the Senate – meaning at least seven Democratic senators would need to join Republicans to pass it and send it to President Trump’s desk.

The Senate, of course, could be somewhat problematic, given that the Republicans only have a 53-47 majority, which is a full 7 votes shy of the 60-vote threshold.

What this means, of course, is that Democratic help will be needed.

The memo

It would appear that the conservative leaders are essentially calling upon Congress to handle this situation the way that President Donald Trump wants it to be handled.

In the memo, they wrote:

Conservatives support President Trump’s efforts to streamline and rebuild a federal government that works for the American people. As the March 14 funding deadline approaches, we support President Trump in his efforts to pass a Continuing Resolution to September 30th and urge all conservatives in Congress to do the same

It would appear that Congressional Republicans are trying to proceed with a clean CR.

It's happening on Tuesday

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) says that the House is ready to put forth a clean continuing resolution.

During a recent appearance on the Fox News Channel, he said:

We are putting a clean CR on the floor early next week, probably on Tuesday. It will fund the government at current levels because that will allow us, as we said earlier, to make sure all the cuts and all the new innovations are calculated so we can actually use it in the federal budgeting. That's what they're afraid of. They don't want us to cut down the size and scope of the federal government because they love that and we don't. And that's the real peril for them. So they don't have a play. They don't know what to do. And it's really interesting to see them eat their own words like that.

It would appear, however, that the Democrats are trying to stop this effort in its tracks.
