Country music legend Garth Brooks made headlines earlier this month after CNN reported that a woman had accused him of sexual assault and other crimes.

However, Brooks maintains that he is the victim of an extortion scheme and has responded by suing his accuser.

Woman claims she was sexually assaulted in 2019

According to CNN, the woman in question is a hairstylist and makeup artist who claims that the alleged incidents took place during a period of time in 2019.

She maintains that Brooks raped in one incident while also regularly exposing himself and sending sexually explicit text messages.

Yet Page Six reported that the 62-year-old musician filed a lawsuit on Tuesday with the District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi Northern Division.

Brooks seeks injunction and damages

The publication pointed out how Brooks named his accuser in an amended filing after previously asking a judge to keep both his and her names confidential.

"When Jane Roe threatened to publish lies about him — intending to blackmail Plaintiff into paying her millions of dollars — Plaintiff filed this lawsuit to preserve his reputation, establish the truth, and put a stop to her scheme," Brooks' original filing read.

"For the sake of his family, and out of respect for Roe's family as well, Plaintiff titled this action 'John Doe
vs. Jane Roe,'" it continued.

The star is seeking "compensatory damages proximately caused by Defendant's intentional infliction of emotional distress, defamation, and false light invasion of privacy, including incidental and consequential damages" along with "punitive damages in an amount sufficient to deter similar future behavior."

Brooks is further asking for an injunction to prevent his accuser from making what he maintains to be defamatory statements concerning him.

Brooks says allegations concern "behavior I am incapable of"

Meanwhile, CNN noted in its report that Brooks strenuously denied the allegations in a statement he provided to the network.

"For the last two months, I have been hassled to no end with threats, lies, and tragic tales of what my future would be if I did not write a check for many millions of dollars," the singer asserted.

"Hush money, no matter how much or how little, is still hush money. In my mind, that means I am admitting to behavior I am incapable of — ugly acts no human should ever do to another," Brooks added.
