Whether because of actual antisemitism or merely misguided naivety, dozens of students and activists were arrested Wednesday evening after staging yet another anti-Israel, pro-Hamas and Palestinian protest at Columbia University.

Among those arrested by the New York Police Department was Ramona Sarsgaard, the daughter of Hollywood actress Maggie Gyllenhaal and actor Peter Sarsgaard, Breitbart reported.

Sarsgaard, 18, a student enrolled at the affiliated Columbia College, was subsequently released with a ticket for criminal trespassing.

Daughter of Hollywood stars arrested at anti-Israel protest

The New York Post reported that Sarsgaard was one of nearly 80 individuals who were arrested by NYPD officers on Wednesday evening in response to a disruptive protest that took over Columbia University's Butler Library while other students were trying to study ahead of upcoming final exams.

The anti-Israel protest began when activists and students forced their way into the library past security guards, continued with chaotic disruptions and vandalism inside the typically quiet study area, and ended with at-times violent clashes between the protesters and the police, during which at least two university safety officers were injured.

Per an unidentified university official, around 65 student protesters were given interim suspensions pending an investigation of their involvement in the incident, while another 33 individuals, mostly including alumni or activist students from other institutions, were barred from entering the campus.

It is unclear if Sarsgaard was among those suspended or barred from campus, and the Post noted that the young student has no known record of previously speaking out against Israel or involvement in prior protests on campus.

The outlet further noted that requests for comment on the arrest were ignored by representatives for her famous Hollywood parents, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard, while a university spokesperson cited privacy laws to decline providing any information about Sarsgaard's involvement or discipline she might face.

Some protesters could face federal consequences

Breitbart reported separately that the Trump administration is taking a hard look at Columbia University and its response to the anti-Israel protest that took place on Wednesday, to ensure that any violations of applicable federal laws by the protesters are properly dealt with, particularly if those protesters are foreign nationals.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted on X, "We are reviewing the visa status of the trespassers and vandals who took over Columbia University’s library. Pro-Hamas thugs are no longer welcome in our great nation."

That move by the State Department stems from an executive order issued by President Donald Trump in January that aimed to combat the increasingly rampant antisemitism seen on college and university campuses nationwide over the past few years.

Trump's order stated: "It shall be the policy of the United States to combat anti-Semitism vigorously, using all available and appropriate legal tools, to prosecute, remove, or otherwise hold to account the perpetrators of unlawful anti-Semitic harassment and violence."

Columbia University could be stripped of federal funding

One possible repercussion for Columbia University is seeing its federal funding get suspended or cut over its failure to take adequate steps to prevent or quickly end disruptive anti-Israel, pro-Hamas protests on campus, which Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) duly noted in her condemnation of Wednesday's Butler Library takeover by protesters.

"While Columbia students try to study for finals, they’re being bombarded with chants for a 'global intifada,'" the congresswoman said in an X post. "President @realDonaldTrump is right: not a single taxpayer dollar should go to a university that allows chaos, antisemitism, and civil rights violations on its campus. Columbia must act -- enough is enough."
