DC Mayor Bowser supports Trump's National Guard deployment there
Democrats have spent weeks crying about President Donald Trump's deployment of National Guard troops to Washington D.C. to assist local law enforcement as the city attempts to quash rising crime.
So it came as quite the surprise this week that Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that she supports the idea of extending the National Guard presence in the city "indefinitely" as Trump's emergency order nears its expiration date, the New York Post reported.
And Bowser isn't just saying that, as she went as far as signing an executive order earlier this week requiring D.C. law enforcement to work with their federal counterparts “to the maximum extent allowable by law within the District."
Under the power of an emergency order, it was three weeks ago that President Trump ordered National Guard troops to help clean up the nation's capital.
What's happening?
Trump's emergency order was only good for 30 days, and since that's coming to an end soon, Bowser made sure to give her backing to the initiative by using her powers to extend it.
Mayor Bowser posted a statement regarding the executive order on her X account, confirming that it would be used to extend the National Guard presence after Trump's order expires.
"Today, I issued Mayor's Order 2025-090 to provide the pathway forward beyond the Presidential emergency," she wrote, attaching a copy of the EO to the X post.

President Trump praised the D.C. mayor for her cooperation while talking to reporters, saying, “We don’t have a crime problem in Washington anymore."
"And the mayor has been very helpful," he added.
Social media reacts
Users across social media had plenty to say about Bowser's take on the situation, with many surprised that she would support Trump.
"I want to Thank you for putting the DC residents first instead of politics. It is very refreshing," one X user wrote.
Another X user wrote, "Thank you for putting your citizens above politics."
It'll be interesting to see how long the National Guard will be in the city, and if that happens in other cities across the country.
