Declyn Thornton Lauper, 26, the son of 80's pop star Cyndi Lauper, was arrested this week in New York City after he was found by officers to be in possession of a handgun and illicit drugs, the Daily Express reported.

The arrest came shortly after NYPD officers responded to a 911 call about a shooting in Harlem Wednesday evening that left one individual hospitalized "in stable condition" with a gunshot wound to his leg.

Per the outlet, Lauper was initially arrested by the police on charges of "criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a controlled substance."

Bailed out by his actor father

The New York Post reported that Lauper was released from jail just hours after he was arrested and arraigned when his father, "Law & Order" actor David Thornton, was spotted using a large stack of $100 bills to pay a $20,000 cash bail on behalf of his son.

That cash bail amount appeared to be a compromise set by the judge who presided over the arraignment in which prosecutors had requested a $50,000 cash bail while the young man's defense attorney, Steven Brill, had requested that his client be released without any bail.

The lawyer argued that Lauper was the "victim of a crime, not a perpetrator of one," and that an investigation of the shooting incident would show that he had been "truly in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Lauper's friend shot in incident outside Harlem smoke shop

The Post reported that prosecutors alleged that Lauper, an aspiring rapper who goes by the name "Dex," had reportedly traveled from Queens to a smoke shop in Harlem in an Uber earlier in the evening with an associate when that vehicle was reportedly set upon by a group of five armed individuals, with gunfire erupting amid the confrontation.

Lauper's friend was the individual who was shot in the leg in the incident -- who is also believed to have been separately arrested and charged with gun possession -- while Lauper himself was arrested when investigating officers searched him and found a loaded Glock handgun and unspecified drugs in a black fanny pack he'd been wearing.

Assistant District Attorney Harriet Jiranek told the court during the arraignment, "The defendant and the separately apprehended individual drove to the location both with firearms to engage in what appears to be illicit activity."

Lauper, who proudly proclaimed his freedom upon being bailed out of jail by his father, is reportedly due back in court for another hearing next week on Feb. 13.

Previously pleaded guilty to "unauthorized use of a vehicle" after he was caught in a stolen car

People magazine reported that the individual who was shot has been tentatively identified as Omar Lewin, 24, and the outlet's sources within the NYPD confirmed that Lewin had been arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

The celebrity gossip magazine also noted that this is not Lauper's first run-in with the law, as he was previously arrested in July 2022 on a felony charge of unauthorized use of a vehicle after he was found in the driver's seat of a stolen 2014 Mercedes Benz.

Per the Post, Lauper had been caught in the stolen vehicle outside a memorial service for another rapper and later pleaded guilty in a deal with prosecutors that resulted in him being ordered to serve five days of community service and to stay out of trouble for one year.
