'Degrading conditions': ACLU files lawsuit to stop transfer of migrants to Guantanmo

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which has become nothing more than an arm of the Democrat party in most cases, sued the Trump administration on Saturday to block it from transferring 10 illegal immigrants who had committed crimes or belonged to terrorist organizations to Guantanamo Bay, a prison in Cuba where suspected foreign terrorists have traditionally been held.

The ACLU said that the transfers violate immigration law because they move detainees out of the country without a rationale for doing so.

The 1o migrants involved in the case are from Venezuela, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan with final deportation orders.

According to Reuters, they are not high-risk criminals or alleged members of a gang or terrorist group.

"Baseless"

U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin called the suit "baseless" and said DHS would work with the Justice Department to defeat it.

Cubans and Haitians who were detained at sea have been held in a migrant detention facility at Guantanamo for decades, but no president until Donald Trump has sent migrants there from inside the U.S.

Reuters also pointed out that of the initial group of 177 Venezuelans sent to Guantanamo, about one-third did not have any criminal record.

This goes against DHS Secretary Kristi Noem's contention that the agency will go after the "worst of the worst."

Alleged mistreatment

The ACLU also alleged that the migrants were being mistreated at the prison.

The group said prisoners were held in windowless rooms 23 hours a day, strip-searched, and prevented from calling family members.

In some cases, they say guards have engaged in "verbal and physical abuse," such as withholding water, strapping detainees to a chair, threatening to shoot them, and fracturing one detainee's hand.

"These degrading conditions and extreme isolation have led to several suicide attempts," the complaint said.

The ACLU lawsuit is only one of several that aims to fight Trump's attempts to get immigration under control.

For the sake of America's security and prosperity, the lawsuits will hopefully fail.
