Dem Rep. Adam Smith says Mamdani doesn't speak for the Dem Party

As Democrats continue to get it wrong and push radical progressive policies and candidates on an American public that clearly isn't interested, some Democrats have taken to telling the truth about what's hurting the party.

New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, a radical progressive Democratic socialist, just found out that not all Dems in the party want him around.

According to The Hill, Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) presumably rocked the Mamdani campaign this week after publicly declaring that Mamdani "isn’t speaking for our party."

Smith seemingly clarified his position by positioning his statement as if he were speaking about how the mayor of New York City, no matter what Democrat it is, doesn't speak for the whole of the party.

What did he say?

Smith, during an interview on "Fox News Sunday" was asked what he thought about Mamadani, who has dominated the headlines given his radical, often ridiculous stances on most of the hot-button issues today.

The Washington Democrat was also asked whether or not he believes Mamdani is speaking for the entirety of the Democratic Party, which he quickly downplayed.

“Mamdani isn’t speaking for our party, any more than I’m speaking for our party. It’s a big tent. It’s a big coalition," Smith said during the Fox News segment.

Smith quickly deflected, taking subtle shots at Fox News as an obvious distraction.

“Yes, Fox News wants to focus on that, but let’s focus on the fact that Trump is now underwater on immigration. Why? Because in addition to that $3.5 trillion deficit, sorry, add to the debt, mainly because of tax cuts, he’s now spending $170 billion more dollars on [Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)]," Smith said in a clear and intentional conversation pivot.

He added, "He says he has secured the border. He’s spending all this money now on going around and terrorizing communities with high-profile ICE raids, which are not effective, which have turned people against him on immigration."

Deflecting

All of Smith's commentary after he was asked about Mamdani was anti-Trump -- a familiar tactic.

“We, Democrats, have a message, and we have a message to deliver. And I’ll tell you this. The mayor of New York, no matter who he is, is not going to be the leader of our party. And we still need to stay focused on those issues," Smith said.

The real issue is that Mamdani is definitely speaking for the Dem Party and many vulnerable Dems are definitely not happy about it.

Dems need to find a way to connect with the American public before the 2026 midterms, and Mamdani isn't the path forward.
