Dem. Sen. Rosen is 'causing headaches' for Biden

The Washington Examiner reports that U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) is "causing headaches" for President Joe Biden.

Per the outlet:

But Rosen is nonetheless one of a growing number of Senate Democrats causing headaches for President Joe Biden as the GOP forces swing-state senators to take a series of tough votes ahead of the 2024 election.

Rosen is causing Biden headaches, as the outlet goes on to report, by not always voting in favor of measures that Biden supports.

It is true that, in the last Congress, Rosen voted with Biden 93% of the time. But, it is also true that this is one of the lowest percentages of any Senate Democrat. In other words, Rosen has proven herself to be one of a small number of Senate Democrats willing to, at times, oppose Biden.

Some examples

The latest example of Rosen opposing a measure supported by Biden occurred just this past week. Rosen, on Tuesday, voted in favor of repealing District of Columbia policing reforms.  The measure passed.

Then, in March, Rosen voted in favor of a bill to rescind an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) waterway rule. Again, Rosen helped the measure to pass.

Rosen has voted to repeal the president's Iraq War powers. She voted to end the COVID-19 national emergency and mask mandates. And, so on.

In the same vein, Rosen has sought to sponsor bills that would be likely to garner bipartisan support, such as bills on broadband access and national security.

When asked about her voting record, Rosen told the Examiner:

Nevadans sent me to the Senate to be a voice for them, and I’m always going to do what’s best for our state, even when that means breaking with my own party. I am always willing to work with Republicans, Democrats, and Independents to pass bipartisan legislation and deliver real results.

The bigger picture

Rosen is not the first Senate Democrat to, at times, vote against the Biden administration. U.S. Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) are probably the most notable examples.

The difference is that Rosen has done so more quietly than either Manchin or Sinema.

This group has been particularly problematic for Biden and the Democrats given the situation in Congress.

Republicans currently control the U.S. House of Representatives. And, the Democrats only hold a narrow majority in the U.S. Senate: 51-49. This means that every vote counts significantly for the Democrats.

That's why, as the Examiner put it, Rosen - Manchin, Sinema, and others - are causing Biden headaches.
