Dem. Sen. Slotkin blasts colleagues, demands they change course and be more 'bold'
The Democratic Party is in absolute, complete disarray, and the ones in the party who are willing to be honest about that are the ones speaking up and suggesting how the party can move in a different direction.
One of those high-profile Democrats, according to the Daily Caller, is Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin, who recently provided some advice to her party through an interview with The New York Times.
In an interview with the outlet this week, Slotkin noted that Democrats "respond to people’s pain with a long list of wonky policies," while adding that they need to be more "bold" and tap into their "alpha energy."
The interview was published as Democrats desperately attempt to find a way to strengthen the party's position ahead of the 2026 midterms, where they have at least a chance at regaining control of one or both chambers of Congress.
What's going on?
Slotkin told the Times what she believes the Democratic Party has lost in recent years, and offered a solution to help get it back, using a sports analogy.
“In the Midwest, alpha energy is about emotion,” Slotkin told the NYT. “Whether you’re a coach and you know what your team has put into the game, or you’re frustrated that they didn’t give it their all, you’re not speaking from wonky details. You’re speaking about your gut and your emotion. I think Democrats have lost that," she said.
She also blasted the party for being "scared" of its own shadow, which is often on display in a day and age of radical political correctness and "woke" policy pushes.
"Alpha energy is synonymous with being bold," Slotkin said. "Call the tough play, take a risk, be bold. And don’t be so damn scared of your own shadow."
Slotkin held nothing back, advising her colleagues that it's time to come up with new ideas and not be afraid of offending everyone.
The Daily Caller noted:
Slotkin also told the outlet that the Democratic Party needs “fresh faces” and “innovative ideas.” The Michigan Democrat added that she thinks fellow members of her party need to speak “truth to power” even if it makes them “less popular with certain groups.”
"Very important point"
Slotkin went on to explain that some of her veteran Democratic colleagues are missing the point at this stage in the game.
"A very important point that some of my colleagues who have been in elected office for 20, 30 years are missing is that it’s not just Trump supporters who are frustrated with their government,” Slotkin said.
She added, "It’s across the board. While Trump is being sloppy about how he cuts programs and cuts personnel and throws tariffs on, very few people in America are hoping that we just return, hook, line and sinker, to the status quo from before Trump."
It'll be fascinating to see if Democrats can make the drastic course corrections needed to stand a chance at succeeding in next year's elections.
