Democrat says Jack Smith will be harder for Trump to defeat than Alvin Bragg

Politico noted earlier this year that even some left-wing legal experts have expressed skepticism over Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's indictment of former President Donald Trump.

Yet in an op-ed published on Thursday by MSNBC, former Pennsylvania Democratic Rep. Charlie Dent argued that charges brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith will be more difficult to fight.

Dent says it will be "far harder" to portray Smith as a political hack

"Indeed, it’s already clear that, whatever the merits of the cases investigated by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, Trump and his allies have found plenty of angles of attack," Dent wrote.

"For one thing, both of those prosecutors are elected Democrats, enabling Trump to hammer them as politically motivated hacks," the former congressman acknowledged.

However, Dent maintained that as "an unelected career prosecutor" who "is not currently aligned with a political party" Smith is immune to such criticism.

"Trump can complain about witch hunts all he wants, but political bias is far harder to argue with Smith — at least with a straight face," Dent stressed.

Republicans accuse Smith of trying to distract from bribery claims

Still, some Republicans argued that Smith's move was timed to distract from revelations about an FBI document which alleges that President Joe Biden profited from a bribery scheme during his time as vice president.

House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik sounded a similar note, telling Fox News that Democrats are meddling in the 2024 presidential election.

"The exact same day that the FBI is forced to turn over to Congress absolutely damning and credible allegations regarding Joe Biden’s illegal, egregious, and treasonous corruption, Joe Biden weaponizes his Department of Justice to indict Donald Trump," Stefanik was quoted as saying in a statement.

Stefanik: Indictment meant "to prop up" Biden presidency

"The American people are smart and understand this is the epitome of the illegal and unprecedented weaponization of the federal government against Joe Biden’s leading opponent, President Donald J. Trump," Stefanik insisted.

"The radical Far Left will stop at nothing to interfere with the 2024 election in order to prop up the catastrophic presidency and desperate campaign of Joe Biden," the New York congresswoman went on to conclude.

Meanwhile, Colorado Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert contrasted efforts to target Trump with the far less intense scrutiny given to Hunter Biden's abandoned laptop.
