The Associated Press reported that Kentucky Democratic state Rep. Lamin Swann passed away this weekend at the age of 45.
The news service cited a statement from the Kentucky House Democratic Caucus which said that Swann's death came days after he was hospitalized for a "significant medical emergency."
Pamela Dixon is Swann's mother, and she was quoted as saying, "Beyond our faith, what comforts us is knowing the positive and lasting impact he had on so many."
"Those include his loved ones and friends; those he advocated for throughout his life; and, now, those whose own lives will forever be strengthened by his decision to be an organ donor," she went on to add.
Dixon did not provide any specific details regarding either the cause of her son's death or what the emergency was that led up to it.
Meanwhile, Kentucky Democratic Reps. Derrick Graham, Cherlynn Stevenson, and Rachel Roberts put out a statement of their own which praised Swann for being "a great friend."
The lawmakers went on to say that their party's caucus was made "better for having known and worked alongside him."
The Associated Press noted that Swann was elected last year and was appointed to the committees for transportation, health services, economic development and workforce investment, and elections, constitutional amendments, and intergovernmental affairs.
Tributes to Swann quickly appeared on social media, including from Democratic state Rep. Daniel Grossberg, who tweeted that he "was a kind-hearted soul who never had harsh judgment or spoke ill of others."
I am devastated by the loss of my colleague, my friend, my brother, Lamin Swann. Lamin was a kind-hearted soul who never had harsh judgment or spoke ill of others. He always found the best in people and loved everyone. In his short career, he had an immeasurable impact. 1/3 pic.twitter.com/c5ymZX9GaQ
