Dems cry foul amid Pentagon shakeup
Democrats are now criticizing the Trump administration for making several big changes at the Pentagon.
They are doing so, according to Just the News, despite the fact that, in the past, they claimed to be in favor of some of these changes.
Pete Hegseth, as the Secretary of the Department of Defense, is spearheading these changes the the Pentagon.
He and Trump has received significant criticism, recently, for the changes from the Democrats.
Here's what is going on:
Hegseth has recently ordered a review of the Pentagon's budget, and it would appear that the review has shown that cuts need to be made.
The Hill reports:
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has directed senior Pentagon officials and military leaders to forge plans that would result in an 8 percent cut to the defense budget for each year over the next five years.
The outlet got this information from a memo that was circulated by Hegseth.
It continues:
The proposed cuts were outlined in a memo issued Tuesday, which ordered a reduction in the Middle East and Europe military commands. On the flip side, it would exempt 17 entities, including a program to modernize nuclear weapons, Virginia-class submarines, attack drones, surface ships, missile defense and cybersecurity, multiple outlets reported Wednesday.
Hegseth deputy secretary, Robert Salesses, has said that the cuts are needed "to achieve our mandate from President Trump."
Democrats cry foul
The Democrats are now trying to claim that Hegseth's actions are bad for America.
Just the News reports:
Mainline Democrats did an about face from their decades long opposition to military spending, and were quick to criticize the prospect of a reduced defense budget and now warn of national security failures as they wage war against DOGE and its sweeping cuts to the federal headcount.
The outlet provides, as an example, a statement made by U.S. Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI).
He said:
These types of hasty, indiscriminate budget cuts would betray our military forces and their families and make America less safe. I’m all for cutting programs that don’t work, but this proposal is deeply misguided. Secretary Hegseth’s rushed, arbitrary strategy would have negative impacts on our security, economy, and industrial base.
Hegseth has released a statement defending the cuts. In fact, in the statement, he claims that they are not cuts at all. He said:
The media wants to call these exclusive cuts, but it’s completely the opposite - It’s not a cut, it’s refocusing and reinvesting.
