Dems say recently departed staffer was Hegseth's 'fall guy'
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, has called for the resignation of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.
Blumethal justified his call, claiming that former national security adviser Mike Waltz has become the "fall guy" for the administration's alleged blunders in national security, as The Hill reported.
“He’s the fall guy. The one who should go is the Secretary of Defense,” Blumenthal said.
“This entire national security establishment of the Trump administration is a clown show except they’re playing with real guns and bullets,” he said. “We should be very afraid.”
Washington Happenings
According to several news sources, Waltz announced his resignation on Thursday, just three months into his role.
That report was substantiated later in the day, when the administration simultaneously announced that Waltz wouldn't retain his current position but rather be asked to take on another administration role.
Waltz was under fire for including journalist Jeffrey Goldberg in a Signal message chain in which Hegseth divulged classified information regarding an impending military action against Houthi rebels in Yemen.
New Adviser
With the position of National Security Advisor standing open is problematic, so Trump has appointed current Secretary of State Marco Rubio to hold the position temporarily.
Rubio responded to the appointment, saying he plans to continue with his "strong leadership" at the State Department while assisting in the new role.
As for the outgoing adviser, Waltz said in a post on social media that “deeply honored to continue my service to President Trump and our great nation,” in response to Trump's announcement of his new nomination.
The New Position
On Thursday, President Trump announced that Waltz had been nominated to serve as ambassador to the UN, a position held previously by former Trump Republican primary opponent and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
In his post on Truth Social, Trump said that Waltz would be nominated as his next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, after several media outlets cited anonymous officials asserting that Waltz and his deputy, Alex Wong, would be leaving the administration this week.
“I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations,” Trump said of Waltz during the announcement.
“From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first.”
