DeSantis says that he will not replace Sen. Rubio with himself
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) says that he will not be replacing outgoing U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) with himself.
DeSantis, according to Newsmax, said as much in a public statement on Friday.
This comes as DeSantis is about to pick Rubio's replacement.
Rubio, of course, is leaving the U.S. Senate for the incoming Trump administration. President-Elect Donald Trump has selected Rubio to be the next Secretary of State, and it is expected that - unlike some of Trump's other nominations - Rubio will easily be confirmed by his fellow Senators.
Who is it going to be?
The task of selecting the person to fill Rubio's Senate seat is left up to his home state governor, namely, DeSantis.
This is a big deal, because the Republicans do not have that big of a Senate majority - especially considering the fact that there are a number of Republican Senators who are not exactly pro-Trump. Rubio is pro-Trump, so DeSantis really needs to find someone who will do as good of a job at supporting Trump as Rubio has done - otherwise this could be bad news for Trump.
All kinds of names have been floated to replace Rubio. At one point, for example, Trump's daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, was suggested. But, Lara Trump herself withdrew from consideration.
Another name that has recently been suggested is DeSantis himself. Some claimed that DeSantis is actually planning to replace Rubio with himself.
DeSantis, however, says that this will not be happening.
It's a 'no' for DeSantis
When asked about the possibility of replacing Rubio with himself, DeSantis recently said, "Absolutely not."
He continued:
It's funny, you know, these people write these things … and anytime they're talking about anything I'm doing, they're just making it up, right? I mean, they'll talk to someone because [they'll] say, 'Oh, someone familiar with the governor's thinking.' Understand, that means they don't know what the hell they're talking about. That means somebody is saying, 'Well, I know how the governor thinks. He's probably saying this.' So they try to do grist for the mill.
DeSantis is clearly a bit fed up with reporters, as he and we should be.
Regarding potential replacements, DeSantis went on to say:
Oh, this person's leading, this person's that. It's all made up, and they're just guessing. nd look, it isn't that hard to guess 10 plausible people; like, there's some pretty obvious people who would be in that mix, right? But they do.
DeSantis is expected to name Rubio's replacement soon, but he said that he needs a little more time to make the decision.
