DeSantis sues Biden admin for 'interfering' in Florida's education system

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), a 2024 Republican presidential candidate known for his relentless intent to protect schoolchildren in his state from "woke" indoctrination in the classroom, is taking action against the federal government.

According to the Washington Examiner, DeSantis sued the Biden administration last week "over a federal accrediting process he said is 'unconstitutionally' interfering in Florida's education system."

The governor is taking action in the wake of threats from the federal government of withholding certain types of aid because of his crackdown on curriculum that he -- and most parents -- are not willing to let their children be subjected to.

DeSantis argued that the accreditation authorities in the state serve as an unconstitutional "veto power" on behalf of the U.S. government, meaning that if they don't like the "reasonable reforms" DeSantis has enacted, they essentially have the power to punish the state's education system.

"Pursue truth"

"We believe in the traditional mission of a university to pursue truth, to be able to promote rigor in academic discourse, and to prepare students to be students in this republic," DeSantis said at an event that took place at Hillsborough Community College's Ybor City Campus in Tampa, Florida.

The governor was joined by "Attorney General Ashley Moody, Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz Jr., and State University System Chancellor Ray Rodrigues."

"We believe in the traditional mission of a university to pursue truth, to be able to promote rigor in academic discourse, and to prepare students to be students in this republic," the governor said.

DeSantis added: "They believe that Florida should potentially lose student aid as a result of making these types of reforms. And so the Biden administration is seeking to crack down on the state of Florida for what we are doing."

"And the way it works is ... there's accreditors, and the Department of Education approves whoever they want to be an accreditor. And then under their theory, the accreditor can serve as a veto against the entire state of Florida. That if our legislature passes, you know, reasonable reforms, the governor signs it, that they somehow get a veto of that process," he continued.

Social media reacts

DeSantis received mixed reactions to the lawsuit across social media. Some strongly supported it, while his critics, unsurprisingly, vehemently opposed it.

"@RonDeSantis once again showing his only political theater platform is to destroy, drag us backwards and control every sliver of our lives. This five foot 9 or less authoritarian ruler is nothing but damage, lies, and manipulations," one Twitter user wrote.

Another Twitter user, in support of the lawsuit, wrote, "Today, Ron DeSantis sued the Biden administration over their interference in Florida, and laid out his plans for what he'd do as President. The Trump campaign, meanwhile was busy trying to make fun of DeSantis' pants. Ron DeSantis is running a serious campaign. Trump isn't."

Only time will tell if DeSantis snags a much-needed win from his legal efforts.
