Despite tariff turmoil, Trump's base is sticking with him

In spite of the growing number of Americans who hold President Trump responsible for the economic turmoil that has arisen as a result of his tariff campaign, the vast majority of Republican Party members have stuck behind him, as The New York Post reported.

A CBS News/YouGov poll found that 91% of Republicans think Trump has a strategy in the midst of his tariff blitz, whereas 84% of Democrats and 57% of Independents hold the opposite opinion.

Many Americans are becoming increasingly worried about the economy and the prospect of domestic price increases as a result of protectionist policies, following Trump's tariff plan, which caused a short-lived stock sell-off and bond market anxiety.

Only 35% of Americans think the economy is performing moderately well or very well, even though 54% of Americans now blame Trump's policies for the economy's status after only 84 days in office.

A big flip

This is in sharp contrast to Trump's consistently positive economic ratings during his first term and the 2024 campaign. Currently, his approval rating is 44% with 56% disapproval.

This survey may serve as a precursor to the political storm that Trump and the Republicans may confront as a result of his tariff measures, which have already caused economic uncertainty.

Republican lawmakers seem to mirror their constituents and lean toward offering the president some rope to see what he will be able to accomplish with the economy and international trade.

However, that might also drop away if the public turns from Trump's plan. There has already been legislation introduced into the Senate to limit his tariff authority, with the support of some republicans, including Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa).

Plan for tariffs

The president has framed his tariff plan as a temporary setback in exchange for permanent benefits. However, many are saying they are beginning to experience some negative impact, and that could be better for the president.

The percentage of people who think Trump's policies are negatively impacting their finances has increased from 42% in March to 49% currently.

The question of the tariffs' final benefit, however, appears to divide them.

Although they are divided on the matter of the tariffs' long-term effects, three-quarters of Americans believe that they will raise prices on common goods and services in the near future.

Long term projections

According to the poll, 42% of people think tariffs would hurt the economy in the long run, 23% don't think they will have much of an effect, and 34% think it will help.

Despite these reservations, 37% support his strategy, while 51% are in favor of his overarching objective of relocating American jobs abroad and negotiating more equitable trade agreements with other nations.

As it stands currently, Republicans (85%) are more likely than Democrats or Independents to think the tariffs will cause an uptick in employment (43% and 20%, respectively).
