DOJ gives Trump back his 'classified docs' boxes
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has finally returned to President Donald Trump the boxes of "classified" documents that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) took during its infamous raid of Mar-a-Lago.
In fact, Fox News reports that Trump recently had the boxes loaded onto Air Force One and returned to Mar-a-Lago.
Trump is now arguing that he has finally gotten justice in the matter.
It is certainly a massive reversal.
Background
This whole effort against Trump was led by former special counsel Jack Smith.
The New York Post recalls how FBI agents who searched Trump’s Florida home on Aug. 8, 2022, seized 33 boxes found in an office and a storage room on the property, according to an inventory list released by the Justice Department.
The outlet continues, noting, "Smith’s team claimed sensitive White House documents were found commingled among newspapers, magazines, clothing, photographs, Christmas ornaments and other personal items inside the containers."
Smith, of course, took the matter to the courts, arguing that Trump mishandled these classified materials and that he refused to give them back.
As is often the case for Smith, however, things did not work out the way he would have liked. The classified documents case ended up being dismissed, and, after Trump won the 2024 presidential election, Smith dropped all cases against Trump and resigned from his position.
Justice at last
Fox reports that "Trump staff members were seen loading boxes onto Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews Friday after the Department of Justice (DOJ) returned them to the president’s possession."
White House communications director Steven Cheung put out a statement, saying, "The FBI is giving the President his property back that was taken during the unlawful and illegal raids. We are taking possession of the boxes today and loading them onto Air Force One."
Following the news that the Department of Justice is returning to Trump the boxes that the FBI had taken from him, Trump took to social media to take a bit of a victory lap.
In a message posted to Truth Social, he wrote:
The Department of Justice has just returned the boxes that Deranged Jack Smith made such a big deal about. They are being brought down to Florida and will someday be part of the Trump Presidential Library. Justice finally won out. I did absolutely nothing wrong. This was merely an attack on a political opponent that, obviously, did not work well.
"Justice in our Country will now be restored," Trump concluded.
