The Department of Justice (DOJ) has officially added "relieved terrorists of their digital currency" to their resume.

According to a Thursday press release, the DOJ announced that it was using the seizure of cryptocurrency as a way of disrupting the Hamas terrorism finances, as Breitbart News reported.

The agency seized about $201,400 in currency, according to the release.

“At Attorney General Pam Bondi’s direction, the Department of Justice is committed to dismantling Hamas using every tool at our disposal,” said Sue J. Bai, head of the Justice Department’s National Security Division.

The Significance of the Operation

According to the press release details, the group's money-laundering operation moved over $1.5 million for the terrorist organization since October of 2024.

A group chat on an encrypted messaging platform gave Hamas sympathizers an ever-changing list of at least 17 bitcoin “wallets” to deposit their donations into.

The DOJ reported that the bitcoin was transferred to an operational wallet and laundered through virtual currency exchanges and transactions using suspected financiers and over-the-counter brokers on Thursday.

“These seizures show that this office will search high and low for every cent of money going to fund Hamas, wherever it is found, and in whatever form of currency,” said U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr. for the District of Columbia.

“Hamas is responsible for the death of many U.S. and Israeli nationals, and we will stop at nothing to stop their campaign of terror and murder.”

Long-term Usage

At least as far back as 2020, there have been allegations that Hamas was laundering funds through cryptocurrency wallets and funding terrorist activities through shady financial exchanges that brought foreign dollars into Gaza and the West Bank.

In recent years, the governments of the United States and Israel have seized substantial amounts of cryptocurrency that is believed to have belonged to Hamas.

Cryptocurrency is just one of many forms of terrorist funding that the National Bureau for Counter-Terror Financing (NBCTF) in Israel focuses on tracing.

Other Seizures

Additionally, the agency has been successful in seizing cryptocurrency from the Tehran-backed terrorist organization Hezbollah, which operates in Lebanon.

“Hamas raised and laundered more than a million dollars to support its terrorist operation, but through our investigation, the FBI traced and seized these funds,” said Assistant Director David J. Scott of the FBI Counterterrorism Division.

“Disrupting funding mechanisms and seizing cryptocurrency from Hamas is one of the FBI’s many tools that we use in the fight against terrorism. The FBI will work with our partners to dismantle this terrorist group and protect the American people from their violent and horrific acts.”
