A reported effort is underway to 'draft' former first lady Michelle Obama to challenge Biden for Democratic nomination

Though it receives very little coverage from the mainstream media, there appears to be an undercurrent among Democrats of concern about President Joe Biden's electability and capability to govern ahead of the 2024 election, not to mention a desire to see somebody else as the party's presidential nominee.

Along those lines, a recent anonymously sourced report suggested that some Democratic Party insiders are "begging" former first lady Michelle Obama to enter the political ring and assume the position of the party's standard bearer and presidential nominee, according to the feminist site SheKnows.

That quiet effort is reportedly based in part on recent polling which suggests that, were she to enter the nearly non-existent Democratic primary contest, Obama would easily defeat Biden for the party's 2024 nomination.

Poll suggests Michelle Obama would defeat Joe Biden in primary contest

RadarOnline reported this week that "desperate Democrats" concerned about the potential for defeat with President Biden as the 2024 nominee are engaged in "secret back-channel talks" to try to convince former first lady Obama to join the fray and take the incumbent's place.

In doing so, "party insiders" are said to point to a recent survey which found that, were she to enter the political arena, Obama would decisively supplant Biden as the preferred choice to be the Democratic nominee in the upcoming election next year.

That cited poll was conducted jointly by The Center Square and Noble Predictive Insights of 2,500 registered voters between July 31 and August 3, with a margin of error of 2.4 percent.

The pollsters tested Biden in comparison to several other prominent Democrats who already are or potentially could be primary candidates challenging the incumbent, and though Biden largely defeated all others whom he was put up against, he fell short against Obama, as the former first lady would garner 48 percent support compared to 36 percent support for the incumbent president.

Polls suggest Trump has grown more formidable

The RadarOnline report also indicated that, albeit to a lesser extent, the Democratic insiders are also concerned by a recent CBS News/YouGov poll which found that former President Donald Trump, far and away the leading Republican candidate for 2024, has only grown stronger with solidified support among his party's voters amid the series of politically motivated criminal indictments lodged against him by Democratic prosecutors.

Trump's steadily increased strength, in comparison with President Biden's perceived weaknesses and shortcomings, has prompted worries that a rematch of the 2020 election will end up with Trump returning triumphantly to the White House for a second term instead of the current incumbent.

Thus, per the outlet and its unnamed Democratic sources, the launching of the behind-the-scenes "draft Michelle" movement among "panicked" insiders and influencers who fear Biden will lose to Trump but believe that Obama would defeat the embattled former Republican president. One Democratic source told RadarOnline, "If Michelle announced, the election would go immediately from a hotly contested footrace to a landslide."

Is Michelle Obama the one Democrat who could "stop Trump" from regaining the presidency?

Another Democratic source told RadarOnline of former President Barack Obama, "Barack recognizes the gravity of the situation with Joe’s disappointing poll numbers. He had hoped that the president would have rallied and come into his own at this point, but that clearly hasn’t happened. With 2024 growing closer and closer, he had to act since he apparently fears Joe is getting too old and frail to win."

A different source said, "While Barack has already endorsed Biden, he’s reneged in private and will publicly throw Joe overboard in a heartbeat if he thinks that the election is on the line." Still another told the outlet, "Democrats say somebody has to stop Trump and Barack knows Michelle is the best person to do it! Party heavyweights are secretly testing the waters for support."

Of course, all of that talk is moot and meaningless if the former first lady resists the alleged back-channel overtures and declines to mount a primary challenge against President Biden, and she has given virtually no indications that she is even willing to consider doing so.

In fact, they pointed out that Michelle Obama has been rather emphatic over the past few years that she has "zero" desire or interest in even running for, much less serving as, the president of the United States, so such a development seems rather unlikely to occur.
