Egg Producers Guilty Of Artificially Inflating Market

Well well well, would you look at that.

The little guy got screwed again.

Apparently, we've been the victim of a terrible scheme that forced us to pay more for our groceries for YEARS.

Three major food companies have been overpaying for eggs for years because "the country's top producers as well as two trade groups engaged in a scheme to restrict supply and inflate costs," an Illinois federal jury decided on November 21.

The decision came at the end of a five-week antitrust trial against Cal-Maine Foods Inc., Rose Acre Farms Inc., United Egg Producers, and United States Egg Marketers.

This is a HUGE victory for the plaintiffs, General Mills Inc, Kellogg Co., and Nestle SA.

"We are incredibly pleased by the jury’s decision," said Brandon Fox, a Jenner & Block LLP partner representing the food companies. "For the first time, the defendants have been held liable for their antitrust violations. We are now going to turn our attention to the damages phase."

The jury, which was made up of nine men and three women, decided that the food companies were right in saying that there had been an orchestrated plot to make them pay more for eggs than what the market would normally dictate.

"The conspiracy did exist," Fox said in court. "You know the players. You know who did it. You've had an opportunity to see it day in and day out."

The same nine men and three women that came to this decision will be the people responsible for deciding what happens during the damages phase of this lawsuit.

That trial is scheduled to start on November 29 and is expected to last for two days.

Of course, this is going to result in companies like Nestle not having to pay inflated prices for their eggs in the future.

Where America's average citizen comes into play is the consideration that giant food companies weren't just accepting the increase on the cost of eggs, they were passing them on to consumers.

There's more than one conspiracy going on in America these days.

Tackling the price of eggs seems like as good of a place to start as any.
