The GOP has done well in 2024, with Republicans retaking the Senate and maintaining their House majority while also seeing President-elect Donald Trump prevail over Vice President Kamala Harris.

However, the party was left in mourning earlier this week after one congressman announced the loss of his daughter.

Christine Burgess died in her sleep this past weekend

According to the Daily Mail, House Rules Committee Chairman Michael Burgess' revealed in a social media post put up on Monday that she had died.

"It's with heavy hearts we regret to share that Congressman Burgess’ eldest daughter, Christine Burgess passed away in her sleep this past weekend," a statement from the lawmaker's office read.

"Congressman Burgess appreciates all of the thoughts [and] prayers [and] respectfully requests privacy for his family at this difficult time," the statement went on to add.

House speaker: "Our prayers go out to our dear friend and colleague"

The Daily Mail noted that news regarding Christine Burgess' passing was met with condolences on social media, including from House Speaker Mike Johnson.

"It is with deep sadness that we share the tragic news about the passing of Congressman Burgess’ beloved daughter, Christine," the Louisiana Republican wrote.

"Our hearts and our prayers go out to our dear friend and colleague and his family at this very difficult time," the speaker went on to stress.

Also speaking up was Texas Republican Rep.-elect Brandon Gill. He told his followers, "Please join Danielle and me in praying for Dr. Burgess and his family."

Burgess decided not to run for reelection in the seat he has held since 2003

The Daily Mail pointed out that Gill was elected last month to replace Burgess after he decided not to run for another term in office.

Gill, who is the son-in-law of conservative author and filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza, managed to defeat Democratic challenger Ernest Lineberger III by an almost 27-point margin.

As the website Ballotpedia explained, Burgess is a medical doctor who practiced medicine for roughly 20 years prior to entering politics.

The Republican has represented his Dallas-area congressional seat for more than two decades since he first ran there in 2003.
