Elizabeth Warren agrees with Trump on critical issue

The headline of this week's editorial post by Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren in The New York Times was unexpected: "Trump Is Right About This One Thing."

The senator wrote that the elimination of the debt limit is an issue on which Trump and Warren agree, as Newsmax reported.

Her main point is that the ceiling on federal borrowing, known as the debt limit, is a political "brinkmanship" tactic that "allows the minority party to threaten economic collapse."

What the Limit Won't Impact

She clarified that neither the spending habits of the government nor the expansion of the national debt are affected by the debt ceiling.

Warren provides a concise overview of the roles played by Republicans and Democrats in manipulating the debt ceiling during the most recent presidential terms in the article.

Naturally, the senator from the Democratic party had some criticisms aimed at Republicans for their efforts to provide "giveaways" to the affluent and corporations.

Current Condition

In her assessment of the current landscape in Washington, Warren says Republicans are planning to “rip health insurance away from 16 million Americans and cut food assistance from about a million children” in order to pass “another wave of tax handouts” for the wealthy.

"But the GOP is also sneaking a “$4 trillion increase to the debt limit into their bill,” she wrote.

“The Republican tax bill illustrates a key point: The debt limit doesn’t stop a single penny of spending. The party in power can simply raise the limit to accommodate their new spending.

According to the Democrat, "Keeping the debt ceiling around just feeds the political games as one party or the other threatens to block any increase and lets our country default,” Warren wrote.

Unlikely Bedfellows

It isn't lost on Warren how unlikely it is for her to agree with the current president on any issue, much less one as big as the reconciliation of the federal budget.

She said as much in her article, taking the juxtaposition straight on when she said, "It is possible that hell has frozen over," in reference to her agreement with the head of the Republican party.

She didn't hold back her other criticisms of the party, however, saying "Republicans in Congress can set aside their big, beautiful billionaire budget while lawmakers of both parties can come together to do what Mr. Trump urged last week…

According to Warren, it's imperative that Republicans "recognize that the debt limit is 'too devastating to be put in the hands of political people that may want to use it despite the horrendous effect it could have on our country.'"
