Last week saw Time magazine announce that legendary British pop music singer and songwriter Elton John is being named Icon of the Year.

Yet instead of just looking back on his sometimes heartbreaking past, the 77-year-old recently expressed one of his last wishes for the future. 

"On my gravestone, all I want it to say is, 'He was a great dad'"

According to People magazine, John spoke with Time about how he wants to be remembered, stating, "On my gravestone, all I want it to say is, 'He was a great dad.'"

"My music speaks for itself," the artist insisted. "My legacy is that I was a great husband and an even better father... The music, the career is fantastic.

"It's been mind-blowing, groundbreaking. But the most important thing to me in my life is making sure my children are happy, they have a wonderful life and that I was good to them. That's all that counts," he went on to declare.

Time noted that John has had a number of health problems in life, including bulimia and drug addiction. The latter struggle landed him in rehab where he learned how to use a washing machine for the first time.

"It was the most embarrassing thing in my life"

"It was the most embarrassing thing in my life when I went into [drug] treatment that I couldn’t work a washing machine," John told the publication last month.

"I thought, 'F--k. Here you are at 43 years of age, and you can't work a washing machine. That shows you how you’re f--ked up," he recalled.

A more recent health struggle came this year when John announced on social media that a "severe eye infection" had "only limited vision in one eye."

John further discussed his eye affliction during an interview late last month with "Good Morning America," explaining that despite having "hope and encouragement," his condition is not good.

"It's been four months now since I haven't been able to see"

"I can't see anything," the multi-platinum selling musician lamented to host Robin Roberts. "I can't read anything, I can't watch anything."

"It's been four months now since I haven't been able to see," John said before acknowledging that his "left eye is not the greatest."
