Reports are now indicating that actor Evan Ellingson died of an accidental fentanyl overdose.

Per Fox News:

Former "CSI: Miami" star Evan Ellingson’s cause of death earlier this month was revealed to be an accidental fentanyl overdose, the San Bernardino County coroner’s office confirmed to Fox News Digital on Tuesday.

Background

Last month, it was reported that Ellingson passed away on Nov. 5, 2023, in his Fontana, California, home, at the age of 35.

"The former actor, who hasn't been on camera for over a decade, passed away Sunday at his home in San Bernardino County -- where his body was discovered in his bedroom ... this according to the coroner's office there," TMZ, at the time, reported.

The outlet added, "The exact circumstances of his death are unclear at this point ... but officials tell us that, for now, there appears to be no foul play involved."

More details about the situation were provided by Ellingson's father. The father revealed that Ellingson had previously been dealing with drug addiction but had recently been "doing really well."

This led many to wonder whether drugs may have played a role in Ellingson's untimely passing.

The latest

The latest reports now indicate that drugs did play a role in Ellingson's passing.

USA Today reports:

Ellingson, best known for his roles in the 2009 drama “My Sister’s Keeper” and crime drama “CSI: Miami,” died of an accidental fentanyl overdose, a spokesperson for the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department confirmed to USA TODAY in a statement Tuesday.

The outlet indicates that the coroner, on Ellingson's death register, ruled that the manner of death was an accident.

Who was Ellingson?

Despite only being 35, Ellingson, at the time of his passing, already had many acting credits to his name. This, in part, is because Ellingson had a big career as a child actor.

Deadline reports:

His career began with guest spots on Mad TV, later moving on to a series regular role on Fox sitcom Titus in 2002. He portrayed Kyle Savage, the son of single dad Keith Carradine in ABC sitcom Complete Savages in 2004. He also played a key dramatic role as Kiefer Sutherland’s nephew Josh Bauer in 24 and as Kyle Harmon, David Caruso’s son in Seasons 6, 7 and 8 in CSI: Miami.

Besides his role in CSI: Miami, Ellingson is probably best known for his role in My Sister's Keeper.

It was believed that, unlike many child actors, Ellingson was going to have just as successful - if not even more successful of an acting career as an adult.
