There remain several unanswered questions about the unexpected death of former One Direction boy band star Liam Payne, who tragically fell to his death from a third-story balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in mid-October last year.

One of those involves the status of the late singer's popular Instagram account, which appears to have been recently accessed by some unknown individual in the U.K., according to The Mirror.

The unknown user who accessed Payne's account is suspected of being a member of his family, which suggests that Argentinian officials have returned to them some of the deceased star's personal belongings that had initially been held as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into the fatal incident.

Recent activity on deceased singer's social media account

It was in October last year that Payne, believed to be under the heavy influence of alcohol and illicit drugs at the time, fell to his untimely death at age 31 from the balcony of the third-floor room he was residing in for a few weeks at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires.

As part of their investigation, Argentinian authorities reportedly seized Payne's laptop computer and cellphone, along with other items of possible interest, from the hotel room in the aftermath of his tragic death.

As such, if the late singer's fans were to check out the "About" feature of his Instagram account, it would display Argentina as the nation from which the account was based, given that was the location of the final posts made by Payne.

Yet, according to an unidentified TikTok user, who shared a screenshot of Payne's account that showed the United Kingdom as the account's base nation, "Liam's account has been logged into within the last few days, as it is no longer based in Argentina."

The natural presumption from that discovery, per The Mirror, is that Payne's belongings and electronic devices have now finally been returned to his British family, though that has not yet been officially confirmed by the family or Argentinian authorities.

Final Instagram post utilized by fans to post tributes and condolences

Marca reported in October that Payne's Instagram account, particularly his final post before his death, had become a sort of virtual gathering spot and tribute location for his legion of fans to leave messages of condolences and grief.

That final post from Payne just weeks before he died was a nostalgic photo of himself with his former One Direction bandmates -- Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik -- alongside late U.S. filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, who died last May, and the caption read: "Rest in peace Morgan Spurlock, it was a pleasure working with you."

The British singer Payne had first risen to fame as a contestant on "The X Factor" TV show, and though he failed to win that televised talent competition, it led directly to the formation of One Direction, which would go on to become one of the biggest and best-selling boy bands in music history.

Impending criminal trial connected to accidental death

As for the investigation into Payne's death, the Los Angeles Times reported in December that five individuals had been criminally charged by Argentinian Judge Laura Graciela Bruniard in connection with the fatal fall, including Payne's personal representative and four hotel employees, including the manager, head receptionist, an employee, and a waiter.

The manager, receptionist, and Payne's rep were all charged with manslaughter because of their "reckless" disregard for Payne's safety and well-being while they were aware of his heavily inebriated state just before his fatal fall from the balcony. The hotel employee and waiter were charged with providing Payne with illicit cocaine on multiple occasions prior to his death.

Per The Mirror, the two individuals charged with selling cocaine face up to 15 years in prison if convicted, and they are fighting an order to keep them incarcerated ahead of a trial next month. It is unclear how much time in prison the other charged individuals face if convicted, and those three were released from custody ahead of the trial.
