Ex-Disney cast member is going to prison
One of Disney's former employees is going to prison.
USA Today reports that 41-year-old Michael Scheuer has been sentenced to three years behind bars.
This comes after Scheuer pleaded guilty to hacking Disney's computer system.
As we will see, Scheuer is facing more penalties than just the prison sentence.
Background
Scheuer's crimes, according to Breitbart News, came after June 2024, when he was fired from Disney for misconduct. Scheuer's departure from the company has been described as "contentious."
"Scheuer was fired from Disney in June 2024, but had retained access to the company’s internal menu system on his personal devices for months following his termination, federal filings reveal," the outlet reports.
Breitbart goes on to describe how Scheuer altered menus.
It reports:
During that time, the former Disney employee reportedly altered menus to display profanity, changed fonts, and in what was considered his most egregious offense, manipulated allergen information on the resort’s menu. Upon hacking Disney’s resort menu, Scheuer falsified warnings to make certain foods appear safe for guests with peanut allergies when they were in fact dangerous to consume. Authorities said this menu altering by Scheuer could have resulted in guests with severe allergies being put at serious risk.
In addition to the menu changes, Breitbart reports that "Scheuer also visited the home of a Cast Member that was impacted by his actions and gave a thumbs-up hand gesture to a security camera outside the residence before leaving."
Guilty
It was back in January that Scheuer pled guilty to the charges of knowingly dispatching unapproved command to a protected computer and committing aggravated identity misuse.
It was only just recently that his sentence was handed down.
USA Today reports:
A former Disney employee has been sentenced to three years in federal prison after pleading guilty to accessing Walt Disney World's computer system and tampering with menus. Michael Scheuer, 41, also was ordered to pay about $688,000 in restitution on April 24 after he pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors in January.
In addition to the prison sentence and the fine, Scheuer has also been ordered to hand over his computer equipment.
USA Today reports, "Scheuer worked as a menu production manager at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, until he was fired . . . As part of Scheuer's duties, he was responsible for creating and publishing menus for Disney's entire restaurant portfolio, which required using Disney's secure servers."
