Ex-Rep. Santos asks Trump for a pardon
George Santos - the former Republican Congressman who is now going to prison for 7 years - is asking President Donald Trump for a pardon.
Santos, according to the New York Post, made his plea during a recent interview with Piers Morgan, on the Piers Morgan Uncensored show.
At the time of this writing, Trump has not weighed in on the situation, so it is unclear whether or not he would consider granting such a pardon.
First, we'll catch you up to speed on the background of the situation.
7 Years
Santos was just recently found guilty of various crimes and was sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment.
ABC News, at the time, reported:
Disgraced former U.S. Rep. George Santos was sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison -- the maximum he faced -- on Friday after pleading guilty to a series of fraudulent schemes. U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert sentenced him to 87 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release.
Santos made an emotional plea for leniency before the judge.
He said:
My conduct betrayed my supporters and the institutions I swore to uphold. I undermined the faith in the very institutions I swore to uphold. I cannot rewrite the past but I can control the road ahead.
The judge, however, was having none of it, as the sentence demonstrates. Not only did he get the lengthy prison sentence, but he has also been ordered to pay $373,000.
"I'll take a commutation."
During his interview with Morgan, Santos said that he would take a commutation of his sentence were Trump to grant him one.
He said:
I’ll take a commutation, clemency, whatever the president is willing to give me. Seven years and three months in prison for a first-time offender over campaign matters just screams ‘over the top,’ and I would appreciate if the president would consider.
Santos went on to claim that, in his view, the judgment handed down against him was "unfair," and he argued that "there was a lot of politicization over the process."
We'll have to see what the Trump administration has to say in response to Santos's plea. Trump has shown a willingness to use the presidential pardon in situations he deems appropriate, but it is unclear whether or not this is one of them.
If no pardon or commutation comes, then Santos is going to have to proceed with his prison sentence. As of now, he is scheduled to surrender himself to authorities on July 25, 2025.
