Ex-White House lawyer says Trump 'won't enjoy' surrendering in Georgia

A former Trump administration lawyer says that former President Donald Trump "won't enjoy" his upcoming surrender to Georgia law enforcement.

The lawyer is Ty Cobb - a former U.S. assistant attorney and a former member of Trump's legal team. Cobb specifically worked for Trump during a period from July 2017 to May 2018.

Cobb recently participated in an interview on CNN, where he discussed the latest criminal indictment of Trump by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D). Willis has accused Trump and Trump's associates of illegal activity in relation to their attempt to challenge Georgia's results in the 2020 presidential election.

Trump has yet to be arraigned. It is expected, though, that he will surrender to Georgia law enforcement in the very near future. There will be more on this later.

"He won't enjoy it."

During his CNN interview, Cobb spoke about Trump's upcoming surrender.

There, Cobb said that, while he does not expect the surrender to have much of an "impact" on Trump," he does believe that Trump "won't enjoy it."

Cobb said, "I do think it will have some, you know, some impact on him… He won’t enjoy it. But, you know, to the extent that it, it’ll rattle him . . . I don’t see that happening."

Cobb, during the interview, also said that he believes that, ultimately, Trump - the Republican Party's clear frontrunner for the 2024 presidential election - will fundraise off of Trump's surrender.

Cobb said:

I don't think he'll be subjected to any physical search, personally, by the sheriff's office. But, I do think they will insist on the mugshot and the fingerprinting. Because that does seem to be routine there and Fani Willis has said that's going to happen. So, I would expect that will happen. I would expect the mugshot will be a forwarded to Trump's PR [public relations] people and they'll be raising money off of it before he leaves the jail.

The surrender

Reports indicate that Trump is not expected to surrender until at least Thursday.

NBC News reports:

Law enforcement officials are anticipating that former President Donald Trump will surrender at a Fulton County, Georgia, jail no earlier than Thursday, three senior law enforcement officials who are familiar with the plan said.

The outlet, however, goes on to report that Trump is still expected to surrender this week.

Per NBC:

These officials, who asked for anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the plan, said they expect the surrender to happen late in the week. Plans are still being finalized and the sources stressed that nothing is official yet.

Willis has given Trump, as well as the 18 other defendants whom she has indicted - until Friday, Aug. 25, 2023, to surrender.
