Fact-checkers forced to debunk false claims that Barron Trump could lose his citizenship under Trump's administration

President-elect Donald Trump's haters can't seem to restrain from attacking not just him but also the nonpolitical members of his family, especially former and future first lady Melania and their son Barron.

Some of those haters have been circulating viral claims on social media that Barron would lose his status as a U.S. citizen if his father achieves his goal of ending so-called "birthright citizenship," according to a USA Today fact check.

Those claims are false for multiple reasons, however, and instead are merely the latest of a years-long series of attacks aimed at Trump's youngest child.

False claims that Barron could lose his citizenship

One example of the false claim that has gone viral on Facebook says, "BTW, according to Trump’s own denaturalization plan, Barron Trump should have to be deported. He was born 3 months before his mother became a US citizen which means he’s not a citizen and has to go. That’s according to Trump’s policies."

A similar but differently worded claim in meme form has also gone viral on other social media platforms like Threads, TikTok, and X, among others.

The gist of those claims is that, because Melania Trump was not yet a U.S. citizen when Barron was born in 2006, he would not be considered a U.S. citizen either under President-elect Trump's purported plan to do away with the notion of "birthright citizenship" for children born on U.S. soil to illegal immigrant parents.

Trump policy wouldn't apply to Barron for multiple reasons

USA Today explained in detail why those claims are false by first sharing what is known of President-elect Trump's plan to clear up any misconceptions.

Per his Agenda47, Trump intends to sign an executive order on Day One to change how the federal government interprets the 14th Amendment and its clause that seemingly grants U.S. citizenship to any individual born on U.S. soil regardless of the status of their parents.

"As part of my plan to secure the border, on Day One of my new term in office, I will sign an executive order making clear to federal agencies that under the correct interpretation of the law, going forward, the future children of illegal aliens will not receive automatic U.S. citizenship," Trump said.

He added, "My policy will choke off a major incentive for continued illegal immigration, deter more migrants from coming, and encourage many of the aliens Joe Biden has unlawfully let into our country to go back to their home countries."

As Trump's plan makes clear, though, the prohibition would only apply going forward and not retroactively, and furthermore would only apply to those born of two illegal migrant parents, and not those born of at least one parent who is a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident.

In both instances, that rules out Barron as a candidate to lose his citizenship, given that he was born 18 years ago but, more importantly, that his father is and always will be a U.S. citizen and his mother, who is now a U.S. citizen, was a lawful resident with a green card at the time of Barron's birth.

False claim was debunked during Trump's first term

Interestingly enough, this is not the first time that media fact-checkers have been forced to address this viral false claim about Barron Trump potentially losing his citizenship status as a result of his father's policies.

In 2018, when Trump floated the issue but never acted on it during his first term, PolitiFact debunked a similar claim that, unfortunately, has been resurrected once more by uninformed Trump haters.
