Championship NWA wrestler Tyrus announced his retirement from the sport Sunday.

Tyrus made the statement of his departure following a loss on Sunday at the National Wrestling Alliance's 75th Anniversary.

In his words

"It's bittersweet," George "Tyrus" Murdoch said of his retirement Tuesday on "Fox & Friends." "It's a happy time. But these are happy tears. It was the right decision and it was time."

"EC3 was the better man. We fought like hell, but it was his time," the Fox News contributor said. "Although I'm retiring from in-ring life, I'll always be a part of the NWA."

The champion's path

"Tyrus’ reign as the NWA Worlds Champion began at the prestigious Hard Times 3 event in November of the previous year," Ringside News reported.

"During a triple-threat match that also featured Matt Cardona and Trevor Murdoch, Tyrus emerged victorious and began his remarkable championship journey," it continued.

A new champion

"EC3 enjoys working in NWA and he has more reason to love the promotion after he defeated Tyrus to win the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship," Wrestling Inc reported.

"The bullrope match for the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship was the main event of night 2 of the NWA 75th Anniversary Show on Sunday, where EC3 began his first reign with the title after Tyrus tapped out," it added.

Tyrus, who has been in the wrestling world since the early 2000s with the WWE, plans to remain involved in the sport, saying that wrestling opened many doors for him.

One of those doors has been his role at Fox News. The contributor has been known for his bold statements on conservative issues that have been influential to many. In addition, Tyrus has been an actor and author, pursuing a variety of dreams in his illustrious career in wresting and beyond over the past two decades.

Tyrus has not announced his future plans but he's sure to remain active in other ways following his NWA retirement.
