Fani Willis, the district attorney in Fulton County, Georgia, faces accusations of impropriety as a court motion filed on Monday alleges that she hired a romantic partner, Nathan Wade, to handle the case against former President Donald Trump.

The court filing asserts that Wade, a private lawyer involved in the racketeering case against Trump, utilized funds from Fulton County for lavish trips with Willis.

The details

According to the motion, Wade's law firm received payments totaling approximately $654,000 from Fulton County since January 2022.

The motion, filed by representatives of Michael Roman, a former Trump campaign official named in the indictment, seeks the dismissal of charges against Roman and the disqualification of Wade, Willis, and her entire office from continuing to prosecute the case.

The court document does not provide concrete evidence of the alleged behavior, such as proof of a romantic relationship or travel expenses. It claims that "sources close to both the special prosecutor and the district attorney have confirmed they had an ongoing, personal relationship."

“Mr. Roman … moves the Court for an order disqualifying the district attorney, her office, and the special prosecutor from further prosecuting the instant matter on the grounds that the district attorney and the special prosecutor have been engaged in an improper, clandestine personal relationship during the pendency of this case, which has resulted in the special prosecutor, and, in turn, the district attorney, profiting significantly from this prosecution at the expense of the taxpayers,” the 127-page filing states.

“Accordingly, the district attorney and the special prosecutor have violated laws regulating the use of public monies, suffer from irreparable conflicts of interest, and have violated their oaths of office under the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct and should be disqualified from prosecuting this matter,” it continues.

Willis responds

Willis plans to address the allegations through appropriate court filings, according to a spokesperson.

The motion suggests that if substantiated, the actions of Willis and Wade could amount to fraudulent activity, possibly falling under federal racketeering law.

The motion alleges that the pair traveled together to destinations like Florida and Napa Valley, California, during the prosecution's course.

Trump reacts

“I AM SO PROUD TO BE SHOWING THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA HOW CORRUPT CROOKED JOE BIDEN, AND OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM IS!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

“ALL CHARGES AGAINST ME, AND OTHERS, SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY DROPPED, WITH APOLOGIES, AND MONETARY DAMAGES FOR THE ILLEGAL AND HIGHLY POLITICAL PERSECUTION OF INNOCENT PEOPLE. IN GOD WE TRUST!”

The allegations are the latest in the ongoing legal battles facing Trump in Georgia as he seeks a comeback bid for the White House in November.
