Fani Willis threatened with subpoena

Georgia state Sen. Bill Cowsert (R) has threatened Fulton Country District Attorney Fani Willis (D) with a subpoena, the Washington Examiner reports

The incident occurred last week when Georgia senators held a hearing that explored Willis' alleged misuse of taxpayer dollars.

Willis, to be clear, was not at this particular part of the hearing. Instead, the senators questioned financial officers about how the funds were used, and they got some surprising answers.

Cowsert, though, also said that he plans to speak directly with Willis and that if she refuses to comply he will subpoena her.

What's going on?

Willis has landed herself at the center of multiple scandals. It is now well known that she hired her lover, Attorney Nathan Wade, to lead the prosecution of former President Donald Trump and that she awarded Wade large sums of money that he then used to take her on trips.

But, it turns out that there is a lot more to the situation than just this. Several government bodies, both at the federal and state levels, are currently investigating Willis' use of public funds.

During the Georgia Senate hearing on Friday, for example, it was revealed that Harris took funds from a government effort that was meant to address problems that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic and instead used these funds to further her investigation of Trump.

Specific details about the situation are unclear because it is appears that the money was not tracked once it was given to Willis.

But, overall, it is now clear that she took money from the COVID-19 Case Resolution Project and used it to investigate Trump and to, perhaps, pay her lover.

The subpoena threat

During the hearing on Friday, Cowsert made it clear that he has a lot of questions for Willis, questions that, thus far, he has not really been able to get answers to.

Accordingly, he said that he plans to speak with Willis and that if she does not comply he will force her to by subpoenaing her.

"She’s a key part of the investigation and her viewpoints are valued by us. We need to hear what she has to say and her explanation and what she thinks the appropriate rules ought to be going forward so that we don’t have this kind of scandal giving Georgia a black eye in the future," he said.

Willis, as mentioned earlier, was not at the hearing. She has, though, released a statement on the matter.

"They can look all they want. The DA’s office has done everything according to the books," she said.
