FBI says suburban Detroit Army site targeted for mass shooting
According to law enforcement, a 19-year-old man was apprehended on Wednesday after months of plotting an assault on a U.S. Army facility in a Detroit suburb on behalf of the Islamic State organization.
Ammar Said was allegedly plotting a mass shooting at the Warren, New Jersey, Army Tank-Automotive & Armaments Command when he was unaware that two individuals he thought were on his side were actually undercover FBI agents who were documenting his every move as Fox News reported.
At their conversations with Said, investigators captured both audio and video footage. Said also provided investigators with scribbled blueprints of the site, which is referred to as TACOM and the Detroit Arsenal.
The Alleged Perp
According to a court filing by the FBI, Said was apprehended on Tuesday, just moments after taking a last look with a drone in preparation for an assault. He is a recent recruit to the Michigan Army National Guard.
“Helping ISIS or any other terrorist organization prepare or carry out acts of violence is not only a reprehensible crime — it is a threat to our entire nation and way of life,” U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon Jr. said.
According to the FBI, Said intended to dispatch an undercover agent to TACOM armed with Molotov cocktails and assault rifles.
The Plan
Said was informed by the other covert operative that he would "be on the first plane to Syria" following an attack.
“That makes two of us,” Said responded, according to the FBI.
Said, who currently lives in the Detroit area, was arraigned in court on Wednesday on accusations of spreading information about a dangerous device and attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization. He remains in custody.
TACOM oversees the supply chain for ground equipment for the Army and employs thousands of personnel. It boasts the distinction of being Michigan's sole active-duty Army facility.
From the FBI Head
Following the disruption of a mass shooting plot at a military facility on behalf of ISIS, FBI Director Kash Patel delivered a scathing warning.
According to what Patel told Fox News Digital, "prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law" will be the punishment for anyone who conspires with foreign terrorist organizations or targets the United States military.
"Let this be a warning: Anyone who targets our military or conspires with foreign terrorist organizations will be found, stopped and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Patel told
Fox News Digital on Thursday. "I commend the men and women of the Joint Terrorism Task Force and our law enforcement partners for their continued dedication to protecting the American people."
