Former President Donald Trump was seen standing behind panels of bulletproof glass as he hosted a campaign rally in North Carolina last week.

It appears that the former president is right to be concerned, as a new FBI press briefing suggests that even nonpolitical actors can pose a threat.

Internet activity shows shooter was interested in Trump and Biden

According to Fox News, the briefing was carried out on Wednesday via telephone by Kevin Rojek, who serves as special agent in charge of the FBI Pittsburgh Field Office.

Rojek provided new details to reporters about Thomas Matthew Crooks, the man who authorities say opened fire on Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.

The FBI agent stated that an examination of Crooks' online activity shows he "became hyper-focused" on Trump's event despite lacking any discernible political ideology.

Nor was the gunman's interest limited to the former president, as he also made dozens of internet searches related to President Joe Biden.

Crooks asked "How far was Oswald from Kennedy?" in online search

What's more, Rojek explained that "from April of 2024 through July 12, the subject searched campaign events for both former President Trump and President Biden, including events scheduled to take place in western Pennsylvania."

Crooks also seems to have taken an interest in the time and location of both the Democratic National Convention as well as its Republican counterpart.

He later registered to attend Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13 and then proceeded to carry out another series of internet searches.

His search terms included, "How far was Oswald from Kennedy?" "Where will Trump speak from at Butler Farm Show," "Butler Farm show podium," and "Butler Farm show photos.'"

Would-be assassin deployed a drone two hours prior to shooting

Additional searches related to AGR International Inc., the company which owns the building from whose roof Crooks fired his weapon, along with weather reports for the day of the rally.

Crooks' intelligence gathering efforts were not limited to internet searches, however, as Rojek confirmed that he deployed a drone just under two hours before the assassination attempt.

Rojek concluded by saying, "Our overall finding is the subject was only on the roof for approximately six minutes prior to the shooting. Between 6:05 and 6:11 p.m."

Fox News noted that the FBI has released images of Crooks' rifle and the backpack he transported it as well as the improvised explosive device found in his vehicle.
