Dem Sen. Fetterman heralds Trump's successful effort to get Pennsylvania native Marc Fogel released from Russian prison
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump secured the release of U.S. citizen Marc Fogel following nearly four years of his being wrongfully detained in Russia.
In reaction to the news, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) praised Trump and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff for their efforts to get Fogel out of a Russian prison and back to his home state of Pennsylvania, The Hill reported.
It was the latest move by the Democratic senator to display his even-handed approach to Trump's second presidency, which involves commending him and working together on areas of agreement as well as calling him out and opposing his agenda on issues where they disagree.
Fetterman praises Trump for release and return of Fogel
On Tuesday, Sen. Fetterman shared on X a statement from National Security Adviser Michael Waltz to announce the release from prison and return to the U.S. from Russia of Marc Fogel, who'd been arrested and held in Russian custody since August 2021 after he was caught with a small amount of medical marijuana.
"Marc Fogel’s return home is long overdue -- and I know all of Pennsylvania, especially his family, will be welcoming him back with open arms," Fetterman wrote. "I want to thank @POTUS and @SteveWitkoff for their efforts in finally bringing Marc home."
Per The Hill, Fogel was a history teacher from Pennsylvania who'd been sentenced to serve 14 years in prison in Russia after being caught while traveling in possession of a small amount of prescription medical marijuana that remains illegal in that foreign nation.
Tuesday evening, President Trump shared on his Truth Social account a video of himself and other administration officials and members of Congress greeting Fogel and welcoming him home at the White House.
The president also posted a few photos from the event that showed Fogel exiting the private jet he was flown home on and kissing the snow-covered ground upon his arrival in the U.S. while wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers beanie hat, as well as him approaching the White House with an American flag draped across his shoulders.
Fogel said, "President Trump is a hero"
In a Wednesday press release, the White House said, "After years of being wrongfully detained in a Russian prison, U.S. citizen Marc Fogel is finally home thanks to the relentless efforts by President Donald Trump and his administration to secure his release -- making good on a promise President Donald Trump made to Fogel’s 95-year-old mother, Malphine."
Fogel himself was quoted as saying during his visit to the White House, "President Trump is a hero … I will forever be indebted to President Trump, to Steve over there -- what a dynamic man this guy is. When I met him, the energy, the can-do attitude just exudes from his body."
"We are beyond grateful, relieved, and overwhelmed that after more than three years of detention, our father, husband, and son, Marc Fogel, is finally coming home," the Fogel family said in a statement. "Thanks to the unwavering leadership of President Trump, Marc will soon be back on American soil, free where he belongs. This has been the darkest and most painful period of our lives, but today, we begin to heal."
Rubio notes Fogel is the tenth American Trump has freed from foreign captivity in three weeks
The White House press release included from a number of other bipartisan lawmakers and officials about Fogel's release and return, including Sen. Fetterman's remarks as well as those from his Pennsylvania colleague, Sen. Dave McCormick (R-PA), who said, "Thank you @POTUS for bringing Marc home! All of Pennsylvania is happy he is back safely, especially his amazing 95-year-old mom, Mafa, who never stopped fighting for his release. Dina and I were honored to witness this emotional and historic moment tonight at the White House."
Special Envoy Witkoff said, "The president’s policy on Americans that are held abroad is that we leave nobody behind. It’s very similar to the military credo," and added, "I think that you’ll see a President who is extraordinarily proactive in seeking all hostages to be released."
Also weighing in was Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who noted, "None of this is possible without President Trump. This is the tenth America that’s come home after being detained somewhere overseas -- in just three weeks in the White House."
