Fetterman leaves possible door open for a 2028 presidential run
The Democratic Party is still bleeding and bruised from the devastating losses it sustained in the 2024 election cycle, especially in Congress and in the White House.
The party has already floated several possibilities for a new face going into the 2028 presidential election cycle, and according to the Daily Caller, Sen. John Fetterman, who often breaks with his Democratic colleagues on big issues -- could be one of those new faces.
During a recent podcast with political analyst Chuck Todd, Fetterman clearly left the door open for a potential 2028 presidential run.
Some left-leaning outlets, such as The Washington Post, have listed Fetterman as a potential presidential candidate for 2028, and Todd pressed the Pennslyvania senator on the idea.
What did he say?
Toward the end of his podcast, Todd held nothing back in asking Fetterman what his thoughts are for a possible 2028 presidential run.
"I know we’re wrapping up, so I’m going to make you answer the ’28 question,” Todd said. “What would it take to get you to run for president?"
Like most politicians, Fetterman danced around the question a bit before giving Todd anything to chew on.
“I am focusing right now on just the burgeoning kinds of chaos and trying to find a balance and find a way forward,” Fetterman replied. “And, you know, doing things that I know that will anger parts of my base. I hope that there is room in my party for someone who wants that kind of truth."
Fetterman also said, "I don't know" when Todd pressed him on whether he would try to forge his own path as an independent-minded Democrat or try to fill the void in the Democratic Party.
"I’m not afraid of being honest. And now if there is going to be blowback or I’m punished, I get that. But for me, I think it’s more important to be honest and to describe the danger of where we possibly are at," Fetterman responded.
He added, "And we have to stop and think before we make another significant mistake that’s even more and more difficult to come back from."
Clashing with his party
Fetterman is definitely not afraid to buck his own party on major issues.
The Daily Caller noted:
Fetterman has differentiated himself from others in his party, including by becoming the first sitting Democratic Senator known to have visited Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence after the November election. He has also clashed with his party on issues pertaining to Israel since its war with Hamas started on Oct. 7, 2023.
It'll be interesting to see in the coming years if he tests a potential path to the White House.
