Fetterman's former allies turn on him in wake of New York Magazine report

To say Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman isn't making any new friends in his own party would be an understatement.

According to Fox News, many of the same liberal Democrats who rallied around Fetterman after his stroke situation have now turned on him due to his pro-Israel stance.

Fetterman, once described as a "progressive darling" of the Democratic Party, has shifted his views significantly, especially since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, and even some of his own staffers say they don't recognize him anymore.

That's not to mention the hordes of radical progressive Democrats who rushed to defend him years ago who have now turned the other way and have gone as far as openly criticizing him.

What happened?

The latest round of criticism came in the wake of New York Magazine hit piece that focused on his health issues, but many believe the real reason he's being abandoned by his liberal colleagues is because of his staunch, unwavering pro-Israel stance.

Fetterman has also essentially sided with President Donald Trump and his administration on several major issues, further upsetting the Democratic side of the aisle.

Fox News noted:

New York Magazine's Intelligencer published a lengthy piece Friday titled "All By Himself" which says how Fetterman "insists he is in good health" in the wake of a massive stroke he suffered in May 2022, "but staffers past and present say they no longer recognize the man they once knew."

One prime example of his liberal allies turning on him came from tech journalist and podcast host Kara Swisher, who immediately rushed to defend the senator in the wake of his stroke.

But now, according to the hit piece, she's taken a wild turn in what she thinks about Fetterman.

"This is so sad and Ben Terris handles it with fairness and empathy,"  Swisher wrote on the left-leaning social media platform Bluesky. "Having had a stroke, I can say meds and self care is key to a good recovery and a great life. This was also so avoidable and the twisting of Fetterman’s massive political skills is painful to read."

Additional examples

MSNBC contributor Rotimi Adeoye was quick to sing Fetterman's praises in 2022, but changed that tune in the wake of the magazine's report.

"The Fetterman story is troubling—not just because of chaotic staff allegations, but because someone clearly still struggling with their mental health shouldn't be in such a high-stakes role. The only solution is political: Fetterman should resign. PA Dems need a robust primary," the MSNBC contributor said.

Clearly, Fetterman has angered his progressive fan base due to his pragmatic views on many significant issues.

It'll be interesting to see how far some of them attempt to distance themselves, even though just a few years ago they were Fetterman's biggest fans.
