The world lost a legendary fitness guru this week -- someone who had a profound impact on the exercise world for decades.

According to Fox News, it was reported over the weekend that Richard Simmons, known globally for his "Sweatin' to the Oldies" workout videos, died at 76.

Tom Estey, the workout guru's longtime representative, confirmed the tragic news to Fox News on Saturday.

According to local reports, first responders were dispatched for a "cardiac arrest of a 76-year-old man at Simmons' Los Angeles home." The initial call didn't identify Simmons as the victim. He reportedly died at the scene.

Last message

Simmons wrote his last message on social media to thank his fans for all of the birthday wishes. The message was written shortly before he passed away.

"Thank you…I never got so many messages about my birthday in my life! I am sitting here writing emails. Have a most beautiful rest of your Friday. Love, Richard," he wrote on his X account.

Fox News noted:

The former fitness coach, who stepped away from the spotlight 10 years ago, told People magazine in an interview this week that he was "grateful" to be "alive for another day" following his skin cancer diagnosis.

"I am grateful that I'm here, that I am alive for another day," he continued. "I'll spend my birthday doing what I do every day, which is to help people," Simmons added.

He revealed to his fans earlier this year that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer, even going as far as documenting the procedures and methods he used to tackle it.

Tributes pour in

Given his legendary status, social media was flooded with memories, condolences, and heartwarming messages for Simmons, who touched the lives of millions during his prime.

"We love you Richard. I’m so happy you came back and we got to see that you were happy and at peace. If anyone deserves to be at Heaven’s Gates it’s you," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "May God bless your precious heart and continue to enjoy your presence. You are loved, and will be missed."

Clearly, his legacy will live on for the ages.
