Former FBI acting director Brian Driscoll removed during agency purge

More changes are coming at the FBI as the Trump administration makes deep cuts, trying to pull out of the tailspin started under former President Joe Biden.

Former FBI acting director Brian Driscoll was given his notice on Aug 6, saying that his firing was imminent, amid what is being reported as a purge at the law enforcement agency, as The Daily Caller reported.

Driscoll was the FBI's acting director, starting on Jan. 20, for a short tenure, but was then replaced by current FBI Director Kash Patel after his Senate confirmation on Feb. 20.

While Driscoll was far from the only removal since the start of the administration, or even the start of this month, it was possibly the most surprising.

From Driscoll

The short-lived director spoke to the firing publically, making it known that he was confused about the move, and wanted some more answers.

"Last night I was informed that tomorrow will be my last day in the FBI," Driscoll said in a statement that he posted to social media on Thursday.

"I understand that you may have a lot of questions regarding why, for which I have no answers," Driscoll said. "No cause has been articulated at this time."

In addition to Driscoll, Steven Jensen, the Head of the Washington Field Office was also dismissed from his position, as was Walter Giardina, a special agent connected to the Jan. 6 prosecutions.

All of this takes place in the wake of what many believe to be a broader reshaping of leadership at the Bureau.

Several talking heads have noted the changes, along with several other firings, making six senior executives and a number of field office chiefs who have either been pushed out or reassigned, showing organizational reorganization.

During His Last Term

While Trump’s overhaul of the office might be under a more high-powered microscope this time, he also made changes to the agency the last time he was in office.

During his first term there were at least two notable removals, including Andrew McCabe, then Deputy Director, who was fired in March of 2018, just 26 hours before his scheduled retirement.

McCabe was accused of authorizing leaks and misleading investigators. Additionally, Peter Strozok, who was an FBI counterintelligence veteran and part of the Mueller-Russia investigation, was also removed from his team in 2017.
