When those who undertake roles in government service are accused of engaging in unethical -- and even criminal -- conduct, the breach of public trust is something that is difficult to repair.

As the Daily Caller reports, a former staffer for multiple Democrat lawmakers who most recently served within the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was arrested on allegations that he abducted and attempted to sexually assault two women.

FCC, Hill staffer arrested

According to the outlet, Jeffrey Gary, a now-former assistant division chief at the FCC, was arrested on charges of assault and battery, abduction, and sexual battery as a result of incidents that were reported to the authorities on May 30.

After posting four bonds in the amount of $14,000, Gary was released, as court records revealed.

As ALXnow.com notes, Gary, a 35-year-old Georgetown Law graduate, is alleged to have abducted and assaulted two females at the Braddock Road and Potomac Yard Metro stations.

The Alexandria (Virginia) Police Department indicated that a woman in her thirties was walking on Madison Street after leaving the Braddock Station when Gary approached her from behind, wrestled her to the ground, and attempted to subdue her, a scenario that was apparently repeated with the second alleged victim.

Gary's targets were able to free themselves and run to safety before contacting police to report the incidents, which did not involve weapons, and with the assistance of surveillance cameras, the suspect was identified and an arrest warrant executed.

What comes next?

Judge Katie Uston of the Alexandria Circuit Court granted bail in the case, though conditions of house arrest, GPS tethering as well as substance abuse and mental health evaluations were imposed.

The judge also required Gary to stay away from the D.C. area Metro stations where his alleged crimes occurred.

Prosecutor Bryan Porter noted the state's objections to the grant of bail and indicated his plan to appeal the ruling.

Porter said, “The Commonwealth disagrees with the bail decision and is appealing the matter to the Court of Appeals.”

Gary, for his part, is slated for another court appearance on July 7, and he is availing himself of the services of a public defender.

Career in shambles?

Gary's tenure in D.C. was marked by multiple high-profile positions, including work as a staff assistant for Democrat Sen. Maria Cantwell in 2015 and also as a law clerk for another leading Democrat, Sen. Ron Wyden, back in 2017 and 2018.

Though Gary was a member of the prestigious Global Law Scholars Program during his time at Georgetown and was working in a coveted role at the FCC until his June 1 arrest, his future prospects and professional reputation are almost certain to be impacted by these damning allegations -- even if he is ultimately acquitted of the charges.
