Former GA lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan switches to Democratic Party
Typically, when party switches make the healdines, it's a Democrat switching to being an Independent or even a Republican, but this week was the exception, as a top Georgia Republican just fled from his party.
According to Breitbart, Georgia’s former Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan announced with enthusiasm this week that he's no longer part of the GOP and has officially switched to the Democratic Party.
The former Georgia leader said he felt like his journey to becoming a Democrat has been one in the making for years.
Duncan, in his announcement, said his path to becoming a Democrat was clear long before President Trump "tried to steal the election" in the state he once led as a Republican.
What's happening?
Duncan made the announcement, in part, on social media this week, saying he was "struggling to love his neighbor" while being a Republican.
"My journey to becoming a Democrat started well before Donald Trump tried to steal the 2020 election in Georgia," Duncan's post read. "My decision was centered around my daily struggle to love my neighbor, as a Republican."

The former lieutenant governor wrote in an op-ed for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution why he believes the switch to the Democratic Party was necessary.
"My time in elected office has taught me the most effective way to love your neighbor on a mass scale is through prudent public policy. Authoring the now $75 million rural hospital tax credit as a state representative and then later partnering with Democrats as lieutenant governor to successfully pass hate crimes legislation has helped give me that rewarding perspective," he wrote.
Breitbart noted:
He bashed Republican efforts to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse in current welfare programs, pointing to budget cuts of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the “program’s effectiveness to continue to help feed hungry kids at school through free and reduced cost meals.”
Social media responds
Users across social media had plenty to say about Duncan's switch to the other side.
"Republicans don’t love their neighbors? I think it is a YOU problem," one X user wrote.
Another X user wrote, "You were never a republican RINO."
It'll be interesting to see if Duncan ever has regrets for his decision to jump ship.
