David Paterson, the former governor of New York, was taken to the hospital, over the weekend, after being attacked while walking his dog with his stepson.

The incident, according to Fox News, took place on Friday night.

Both the 70-year-old Paterson and his 20-year-old son were injured in the attack.

But, the good news is that both have been released from the hospital.

Here is what we know:

The New York Post has reported the latest details about the attack.

Per the outlet:

Paterson, 70, who is legally blind, and his wife’s son, Anthony Chester Sliwa, were taking the family dog Bella for her nightly walk Friday when they encountered three youngsters, possibly teens, and an adult as the kids were climbing a fire escape on Second Avenue near East 96th Street shortly before 9 p.m., according to the elder Sliwa.

Paterson told the individuals who were attempting to climb the fire escape to get down, and that is when they were attacked.

Curtis Sliwa said:

Anthony was able to hold them off because Gov. Paterson is sight-challenged, but the governor was also in the middle of this too and they both stood their ground.

And, luckily, both survived.

"Nothing major"

After the incident, both Paterson and his stepson were taken to the hospital.

The Post reports:

Paterson was “battered and bruised but nothing major,” while Anthony ended up with a “busted lip” and is still waiting on results of a CAT scan to see if he has a concussion, Sliwa added.

They were treated and released shortly thereafter. The Post adds, "The brave duo were released from the hospital Saturday morning, Paterson’s spokesman said."

Paterson has released a statement on the situation through an intermediary, saying:

The Governor’s only request is that people refrain from attempting to use an unfortunate act of violence for their own personal or political gain.  He and his wife, Mary, are thankful for the quick response time from the police and the outpouring of support they have received from people across all spectrums. Governor Paterson’s main concern today is Kodai Senga and the New York Mets, but we will provide any additional updates as necessary.

At the time of this writing, not many additional updates have been provided. Video has been released of the incident, which does show clearly the attackers. Police are currently trying to locate the suspects, and, to this end, they are asking the public for help.
